BMW 650 MPG suprise
Discussion
Hi All,
Had the usual trek home from work on Thursday, but was tired and not in a driving mood. So set off for a trek across Newbury and off to N. Yorks. While stuck at the lights reset the trip computer for MPG & speed. Slow trip across town, heavy traffic up the A34 dual carriage way, tended to stay to an indicated 75, where possible. A small amount of stop start around Coventry and again on the M1. Acceleration was at normal traffic speed. Traffic flowed reasonably well.
So, 230 miles at an average speed of 66.9 and an average of 33.6 MPG based on computer read out (Assume it is reasonably accurate). Boring journey and will most likely never happen again, but just shows how technology has moved forward.

yes,
There are 2 computers, the one for the journey is the one on the right.
The one on the left is over the last couple of weeks of general stuff and was
Duration 23:10 hours
1271 miles
Avg seed = 57MPH
Avg MPG = 28.8
Nice motor you have there,i did a similar surprise mpg trip in my 4.8is it was a 60 mile run sat at about 50 to 55 mph & it returned 34mpg i was so shocked i had to take a photo of the reading on my phone! There are 2 computers, the one for the journey is the one on the right.

Obviously no where near your mileage but it does show if you tickle them they can return decent mpg.
Its a great sounding engine & wish i had your lighter body in the 6 series.

For the same distance, my consumption is currently 31.9 in a very smoothly driven and well maintained 328i. I'm slightly jealous. There are 2 computers, the one for the journey is the one on the right.

Getting to work and back would be a tad more pleasurable in a 650i, I feel.
My 550i touring has averaged about 25mpg in the 90K miles I've had it. Around town it is high teens, but get her upto speed and steady cruise at 75mph and you'll see 30mph or so. I averaged 31mpg recently on a 210 mile drive from london to chester.
Towing the caterham to the 'ring and back last year saw an average of 22mpg, which for towing isn't too bad either!
It does seem to be 2-3mph better than the 540 E39 I had, and taht was a manual vs the auto I have now. Plus now 360bhp vs 286....

Hi all,
Trek to work is ~ 230 miles, mainly on the motorway, so probably quite different to a average motorist. Over the last few weeks, it has been mainly motorway.
MPG is definately better that my OH's 52 reg 330i vert over the same journey.
This was a one off, but just shows what is pssible.
I will admit that if driven as intended, the car comes alive, but the mpg does tend to suffer a little.
Edited to add, as implied in orignal post, that journey was probably one of the few times the carpet under the accelerator will not have been squashed.

I'm going to use mine tomorrow and pack the wife off in the 182. I want to see what I can get on my commute.Trek to work is ~ 230 miles, mainly on the motorway, so probably quite different to a average motorist. Over the last few weeks, it has been mainly motorway.

I also have a 550i touring, but a manual and funnily enough I came from a E39 540i Towing the caterham to the 'ring and back last year saw an average of 22mpg, which for towing isn't too bad either!

I would echo your consumption figures. Good to hear yours is on 90k, mine is at 38k and I stress that i may be forced to sell it as the miles creep up. Have you had to replace many suspension parts etc?
Can I ask you fellas? If you got another decent car and had it say for a year and averaged around 47 and driving like you stole it 43 and doing a motorway at 70 56mpg ,how would you feel mentally going back to the figures you have been mentioning, bearing in mind the above car can do a ton without thinking.
You see that is my dilemma.

To give you a quick idea, in the last 3 years I've had a Mondeo ST TDCI, BMW 123d and BMW 530d, now the 550i as above, also had a M3 and 540i in the same period. You see that is my dilemma.
To sum it up, I'll never buy a diesel again, didn't realise how much daily enjoyment I lost driving a diesel. Now every trip, regardless of how short or long is entertaining again, you just can't put a price on that.
My E61 530d auto averaged 31mpg, 550i is 25mpg on the same journeys.. given the complexity of the diesel engine and expense to fix them, it wouldn't take much of a bill to wipe out any advantage of a modern diesel vs a the V8.
