I have a 330d with 140k on the clock, it's never felt that lively towards 3000rpm but since disconnecting the MAF sensor it feels like a different engine. I've heard you can clean them but would a new one be the way to go? Cheers for any advice.

I presume it's an E46? The later air mass meters are modified. As a BMW Technician I used to reprogramme the engine ecu to match the new air mass meter. If you didn't do this you would lose power, even with the new meter. I presume this is still necessary, it would be worth checking if fitting a new meter.

Not quite. A new sensor is always best but you can try cleaning it with contact cleaner.

If fitting a new one the adaptions need to be reset for the car to 'learn' the new sensor. However, if you don't do this the car will eventually learn the new sensor, it just takes longer.

I tried cleaning the MAF on my E46 320D nearer the start of the year as I was suffering boost problems. It made no difference and I used the correct cleaner. I then ordered a new MAF and fitted it. Again no improvement till it went in for an inspection 2 and got recoded as suggested by he mechanic. The car is completely different now and a joy to drive. For the £150ish the MAF cost me it was worth every penny replacing it and the difference could easily be seen in the sensor when comparing the two.

I changed the MAF on my 02 325i after a Faulty MAF reading.

Fitted it myself though so it's not been recoded or anything like that.

Is this something that needs to be done??

I was told by the mechanic I used at a BMW specialist that it did need to be done.

Thanks for all the useful advice. I tried cleaning the sensor to start with but didn't make any difference. I got a new one from GSF for £180 and its like a new car, I was going to get it re-programmed but according to the paperwork that came with the MAF it only applies to old units with a specific part number.

Hi, I have a 2001 320ci with maf problems. Runs rough like its going to stall at start up. Removed maf and it runs better so I guess i need a new one. my question is, if i buy a new one do i need to get it reprogramed on a 2001 or is it just plug n play?
Thanks in advance.

New air mass meter needs no programming on our car. Don’t be tempted with a cheap one though.

Thanks Helix, I was very tempted as the gen part is near £200! I only paid £700 for the car and it needs a few other things too.
