Looking at changing to an X5 from an XC90 - we live in an area where we do need at least all season tyres (Pirelli Scorpions work well) and possibly winter tyres. The M Sport has 19/20 inch tyres, has anyone managed to track down runflat versions of these, otherwise it looks like we will need to go for an SE with the 18 inchers/

Cheers

You do not have to run on runflats.

Would prefer to keep to runflats if poss. BMW cant/wont arrange for different tyres from new - we would need to effectively bin the original set and buy from scratch. The cost of doing that is almost as much as buying an extra set of the 18" wheels complete with winter tyres. Bizarre!

This has got to be the best solution anyway... when I priced up the BMW supplied set for my wife's X3 last year, and compared with the cost of the same winter tyres on their own, from a discount supplier, there was only a few hundred quid difference. Also my dealer does free fitting and storage of the unused set.

Runflats ruin the ride but I would suggest keeping them for summer use if you can't change them and then buy a separate wheel tyre combo with some decent winter tyres.
To be fair when I got caught out with normal tyres and hit some bad snow my L200 in 4wd (no need to lock the diffs) was solid as a rock I was pulling people out of ditches etc.
I don't know of the X5s ability to lock diffs and the like but if you just fitted something like Bridgestone duellers you would be fine all year round.
They are a tarmac tyre but they are fine on green lanes and soft off road, if you are experienced in off roading then they can be used in some fairly hairy situations, but as they are road tyres they really only are good up to wet and slightly boggy green lanes and the like,, I have used them to get across a wet ploughed field in an emergency once but it required all the diffs locked as the tread blocks are very close together meaning pickup on the tyres is high compared to all terrain tyres.

On road performance is brilliant though and in snow they are utterly planted, I towed an unbraked 1.5ton diesel bowser behind me in 1' of snow and you would have though the road was just wet, they're stunning considering the price and design spec of them.
