E60\61 18" Winter Tyre Sizes

Afternoon all,
I have a spare set of 18" M Sport alloys for my 550i touring to stick winter tyres onto.
If you aren't aware the touring has 245\40\18 all round, not wider on the rear.
My question is, will I get away with 225/40/18 for the winter. I appreciate it should be 225/45 if going to that width to keep the rolling circumference closer. But a mate has a set of Continental winter tyres which have only done 100 miles which are half the price of a new set.
