immobiliser woes

unlock the car and the light flashes rapidly, put the key in the ignition and turn....still flashes rapidly, any ideas?

What car, what year, what type of immobiliser does it have fitted?

98 E36 B3 not sure what type but it consists of a dongle on the keyring

Without knowing what immobiliser it is it is a little difficult to be certain, but if the light continues to pulse and the car does not start then do you have a spare dongle?

Really need to know what immobiliser is fitted.

ETA, a picture of the 'dongle' may help.

Sterling I think and the dongle was a black plastic teardrop shaped thing, the cover fell off some time ago though

The other alternative is to find a local alarm installer and get the current system stripped out and a new system fitted, probably cost circa £100.
