Looked at a E46 which had 255/40/18 on front and 255/35/18 on the back.

I have been wondering if theres a reason for this or it's stupidity on the owners behalf?

The 35 profile should be on the front.

18s on an E46 are IIRC 225/40/18 on front and 255/35/18 rear.

Lots of vehicles come with 'staggered' tyre set-ups.

However you normally have the 'larger' tyre on the rear, and fitting an excessively sized rear tyre to the front will usually cause rubbing and tramlining.

Are you sure you read the front size correctly as 255 (unlikely to be the correct size) and not 225 (which could be the correct size).

Stupidity on the owners behalf - it should NOT have 255's up front. They should be 225.
