BMW X5 gearbox replacement
Discussion
I cant answer your question but I have just gone from an X5 with the 5 speed to an X5 with the 6 speed and the 5 speed is much better and I wish I could go back to a 5 speed in my 6 speed car.
I very much doubt if they could be swapped because they are both integrated electronically with the management systems.

Is that because of the quality of the shifts, I understood one of the main reasons for change was the 5 speed breaks but the 6 speed doesn't.I very much doubt if they could be swapped because they are both integrated electronically with the management systems.

Maybe because the 5 speed breaks but the shifts are far rougher and the car never knows what gear it wants to be in. It will rev to 3500 in first then shift straight through 2nd into 3rd immediately. It feels as if you are flooring it off the lights then immediately back off.
The car has the latest software for the transmission and it has been reset to factory stock just in case it has adapted to a previous owners driving style.
I am very unimpressed with the transmission and really wish I had the old 5 speed from my 4.4i in it.
Very dissappointed.
