Hello chaps, I just thought I'd share this with you, and will greatfully accept any help you may be able to offer, as at the moment I'm stuck, and my love affair with BMW motor cars may be very "over" !

Last Saturday night, whilst in Blackpool with my wife, my car missfired and stopped.

10 hours later, and the RAC get the car and us back to Worcester, the car on the back of a low loader.

After a few hours kip, I set about looking for why my pride and joy has stopped working.

To cut a long story short, number two injector is running at full bore as soon as the engine turns over, it's a wonder it didn't go hydraulic.

I trace this back to the ECU, I scope the injector outputs (it's npn for those interested), all ok, except number two, which is permanently low.

Now the sad part, if your car has the diamond shaped key (as opposed to the round key), your car is EWS 3 ....... or later. (you can confirm what EWS level your car is by removing the fag packet tray from by your right knee, and reading it from the module)

If you are EWS 3 or later, it would appear you are completely and utterly f***ed, sorry for that word,(I've starred it myself), but I'm not a happy bunny !

EWS 3 or later means you cannot use a second hand module, although you will see these for sale all over the place for £60 to £100, and reprogram the module using autologic .

It would appear you cannot use a "thief kit", (change both ecu's,and the ews module, along with the ignition barrel), and you cannot modify the car back to EWS 2 or earlier, as they are a bosch part, rather than the later siemens, all the sensors are the opposite mode, and apparently it wont control the vanos, and there seems some doubt it will like your gearbox.

At the moment it appears either I part with £1,300.08 to my local main stealer, or I walk.

The ECU is a Siemens DME MS42 5WK9037 7 500 255 (this has been updated twice since 2000 when mine was built .... I'm told)

I'm struggling to find anyone that can do anything with it ..... at the moment, I'll keep you posted as to how I get on.

This is the second module to fail in just over twelve months of ownership, the ABS ECU went last year, costing me the best part of £500.00 by the time I'd finished.

Give me back a plug & play E34, I'm getting rather bored with an E39

You can either have EWS deleted from a second ecu or fit a donor ecu/module/lock set from another car which would be cheap,I have done this with E46's.

Its Unusual to have a faulty siemens DME on this model.

Check all relays related to DME and Fuel.

The ECU Doctor in the South West might be able to sort this. He is a real technobrain and was the only man to sort my ECH on my Mitsubishi Twin Turbo 3000 GT which Mitsubishi protect in the same way.

New ECU from Mitsubishi £3700.

ECD Doctor rebuilt reprogrammed and re set up my old ECU for £300 all in.

Just a thought.

The earlier poster could be right Siemens are pretty reliable bits. Try all the relays it could be them failing.

Give these people a try http://www.actronics.eu/en/ They've just done my ABS ECU for £170 including vat and return postage.

BBA Reman should be able to help.
They should be able to fix the ECU if it is hardware (ie an injector driver shorted) or virginise the ECU.

It's the virgin bit that can make it tricky, BMW kit won't attempt to sort out an ECU which has already been programmed. Autologic might.

I did see a place that will virginise an MS42 for about 50-60 quid, and then autologic or BMW should be able to reporgram back as if it is a new ECU.

That would be brilliant if you can remember where.

I've "repaired" the cpu by default, but I don't trust it, the output to injector 2 was short circuit to 0 volts, after I'd soldered a wire onto the back of the socket (to help me trace to which IC it went to), it magically became the same silicon junction reading as the others ....... and the ecu works.

I cannot accept this, open ciruit to good (as in dry joint), I'd go with, but not short circuit, the pcb is at least 3 layer, and may even be 5.

With the very real risk of "hydraulcing" should the problem happen again .....

As suggested in an earlier post, I'm playing with a thief kit from an identical car ( cc, vanos, security level, gearbox etc etc), I have the car working, now I just have to sort the locking out.

http://ecudecode.go-ecommerce.com/shopping/mall/ec...

I can't say I trust them, but they offer "decoded, ready for programming" ECUs, which I guess means they have had a new virgin ECU pass through, and the have memory dump saved to clone it.
