BMW 840?? crazy or not??

Hello to all fellow petrolheads!!

I've been lurking in the ph ads for the past few weeks and have been watching the BMW 8 series, (especially the 840 ones) changing hands for prices close to 2k!

What's your view on a potential buy as far as reliability and maintenance costs are concerned? Would i be too crazy to think that I could buy and run one for 3-4k miles per year without it turning into a money pit, or all these cars are as unreliable as they say?

A £2k one is sure to be a money pit, as "good" examples start at around £5k. The engines are strong but the electrics are their failing.

I wouldn't touch an 8-series for £2k. Good examples, as said above, start from around the £5-£6k mark. If you can stretch to that they are great cars.

On what basis do you say the electrics are a problem? That's news to me...

Priced at £4K cos I need the money, in a bouyant market it'd be worh twice as much...

A 2 grand 840 will most likely be a dog and will need a great deal of money to get it half decent. You really need to start at looked after ones from 6k upwards unless you want to pay the difference in repairs.

Once up together an 840 will only be expensive to run on fuel or if not maintained.

A 2k car would only be worth anything for parts.
