Just moved the car off the drive, and when slowly turning the wheel, it was clicking/creaking. Anyone know why this may be? Common problem perhaps? It sounds like it is coming from inside the engine bay (steering column maybe) rather than the steering wheel itself.

Car is a 56,000 mile Z4M Roadster on an 06 plate.

Thank you in advance.

Some others have suggested it may just be the bushes causing a clicking/creaking noise in the steering. Could that be right?

Unfortunately not - they're tight.

Looks like other people that have a lowered Z4 have similar problems.

I’ve got a 2003 Z4 & this also has an intermittent loud squeak from the steering. There’s no pattern to when it happens but usually it occurs after driving the vehicle on a short trip then when you go to park the car there’s a loud rubbery/dry squeak coming from somewhere around the bulkhead area where the steering column passes through into the engine compartment or my other thoughts were maybe the lower ball joints squeaking when turning the steering lock to lock. My cars still under an approved used BMW warranty but it’s almost impossible to replicate the fault when I want to show the problem to someone & it always happens at the most inappropriate times usually when you’re in a crowded area where everyone stares at you. I’ve not really had much time to look into the problem myself but as ‘Pulse’ says I would be interested to hear from others if it’s a common problem & what can be done to rectify it.
