Is this a bargain, or going to be more of a pain in the arse than sitting on a wasps' nest?

At what point to 5 sereises fall to bits? I've got a Laguna at the moment with 115k on it, so whatever i drive it's going to fall to bits.

For that money it will be a right hoot.
I have a 525ise on a K plate with 167500 on it. It drives excellently, with no rattles or anything else for that matter.

E34 5 series's are superbly built, dont rust and all interior trim etc is very durable, as long as the mechanics have been well maintained and in good order no reason why there shouldnt be plenty of life left in it.

But I would get that engine checked over by someone in the know, because if anything is wrong with it I gaurantee it wont be cheap to fix, and your not going to be able to get parts from a breaker for it like your more regular 5

... our 5 is just run in being a '95 with 85k on it, other than routine servicing its only had tyres, brakes (pads & discs), shock absorbers... oh and a pipe on the air flow meter (cost £15!)

Alec, get an insurance quote first, then get the car checked by a specialist (If the car was in Bristol I would recommend Clayton Cars in Ashton gate, ask for Pete). If they say you can get another 30/40k miles out of it without spending much other than standard servicing go for it.

Edited to say look at what else is out there for another £2k on top. This one recently got sold with less than 100k miles on the clock:

I've had an insurance quote done on a regualr 535, but i suspect all the hartge bits will make it a bloody nightmare.

Dont write the insurance off.

I have an Alpina B10, although a more capable car than the Hartge (I would love to own both!), my insurance is just over £600. Im 29 with 6 points.

If I had the spare money, that would be on my drive.
