In 20 years i've never used a non BMW garage for any work - until now when i've just had the rear pads done by my local garage on my e90 m sport 330d. Inevitably - a disaster - they can't get the warning light to go out, even though they're replaced the sensor. They've googled everything and tried it all - every forum. Any more suggestions other than to only use main dealer...?

many thanks

If they cannot get it out by using the menu on the dashboard they have done something wrong, when I worked at VW they always put their sales BMWs through to the dealer to get the brake pad warnings reset until I started doing it via the instrument cluster.

I suspect they have not fitted a new sensor

BMW dont make brake pads, the stick their name an a box and inflate the price.
You were unlucky, and as said maybe not connected properly.

Main dear charge £232 to change them an independent it's £160

Id say for post 3 year old BMWs you need to do the following at main dealer
Oil change
Brake fluid change
Exhaust
Micro filter change
Inspection that's it

Tyres brakes discs fuel tank independant

If they changed the sensor, it clears through the cluster reset. Engine not running, ignition on.

Called BMW main dealer (will not name and shame)
I asked for rear brake pad change cost they said it is highly recommended to chafe the fronts too. I said idrive says 30k miles life left and rears due now. They kept pushing saying idrive must be wrong they always change all round.

End of story they refused to quote a price...

100% agree, I tried a quick short cut on a 320d tourer that I did rear pads on, as the cable is behind the arch liner I tried to get away with not replacing it as I was pressed for time, but it would not reset on the old sensor

New sensor fitted, reset on the cluster with no problems

On the e39, once the light came on you had to replace the 'sensor' because it goes open circuit by virtue of it physically wearing through the circuit.
Once replaced it should go out after a few ignition cycles.

Had this problem on a BMW the other day spent about an hour trying to do it. The light can only be reset if the brake pad sensor is changed as its a progressive sensor

I just had the pads done on my e46. The mechanic said the light will go out after 50-60 miles. Was more like 100 miles but then it went out. Don't know if this is the same in your case but maybe.
