E46 M3 SMG question

It is normal. Best prevented by lifting slightly as you change or selecting S4, but if you want maximum attack shift time, the clunk will be there.
The little guide I got with the car mentions that "some acoustic feedback from the drivetrain is normal" or similar. It doesn't stop you thinking the back end of the car's fallen out, but it's nice to know it's normal
