Looking at a lci 335i that's remapped by evolve to 390bhp. It's done 38k and is a 2008 but is the lci version so I'm not sure which engine it has?

I have heard the twin turbo is more prone to issues with turbos and the later single turbo is less so therefore i am curious to hear anyone's feedback?

My friend had one for a year or so before getting the RS4 that he now has. Absolutely fantastic car, very quick, and comfortable. Never really felt that sharp or immediate even in msport form though. Handling was a bit mundane, secure and safe but not that exciting and the auto box although great numbed the experience a bit for me.(I had an e46 m3 at the time and it was much more involving)A great car if you want to cover distances very quickly with lumps of comfort thrown. We covered a 600 mile round trip in it and I got out feeling much fresher than I had from virtually every other performance car I have owned

Think his was running around 380bhp and he sold it with approaching 70,000 miles issue free other than a couple of split boost hoses. As always service history is important and allowing the car to warm up properly and particularly cool down properly so the turbos don't get oil starved when hot. Obviously it is hard to tell how careful the previous owner was on this front.

It will have the N54 engine.

The single turbo N55 engine wasn't fitted into the 335i until sometime in 2010 IIRC.

The latter is as important as the former.

Only problem with the N54 in high tune is inlet temperatures. Mine was modded to about 400 bhp without any change to the internals and lasted 40k km without any probs (in Germany hence high speeds over long distances included). High pressure fuel pump went twice and was replaced under warranty but would have gone without the mods as well.

Thanks all, I take it that as it has done under 50k I can buy a bmw warranty?

Does it being remapped effect the warranty?

Yes, if you "modify your car" (that includes remapping), it invalidates your warranty. You can play a game of cat and mouse (e.g., remove the remap when going to your dealer, put it back in afterwards) but I have no idea how easy it is for them to find out even if you did that.

Yes you can.

My 335d was remapped and under BMW warranty, it was flagged up on its initial visit as they were doing a software update that would wipe the map, however they only called to advise me as such and there was never any sues thereafter with the remap reinstalled

I have an N54 335i; its had an Evolve map for the last 20k miles with no issues at all. 390bhp from a standard Evolve map isn't likely; you need some hardware changes too. A uprated FMIC should get you close 390 and 3" catless downpipes 415-420ish.

If i rang up evolve and gave them the reg of the car in question, would they know if it had any hardward upgrades?

The car for sale says there is a dyno print out to prove 390bhp.

They'll certainly take your money, but will they pay out for anything they could claim was down to the remap?

Means nothing because of the variations and inaccuracies between dyno's.

390 on one could be 370 on another etc.

Sal and Imran are great guys and have been working on the N54 for a long time; I've been very happy with the map on mine. Is it an Evolve Dyno printout ? Evolve will usually include some text on the display/printout which details if any mods are on the car. I'm not sure if they would/should discuss details of the car you're considering; it currently belongs to someone else.

Evolves own website only claims 370 after a map. A good stock N54 appears to make about 315hp and 335lb-ft; you can expect about 60 more horsepower and 70 torque from a good map.

They paid out on a various software updates to cure a shunt from the gearbox, leaking red boost hose and diff input seat which "could" be attributed to the higher stresses from a remapped engine

Worth noting that after each software update the remap was reinstalled

That's mainly low cost work for BMW, while they are up on your premium why rock the boat. However, say your gearbox needed replacing rather then a software update, or you needed some other repair which even several more years of collecting your premium cheque wouldn't cover? I doubt they'd pay out then, without using the remap as an excuse.

Wouldn't let anyone called Sal and Imran near my car.

Without using the remap as an excuse? So your suggesting BMW warranty just won't pay out as I haven't paid enough in?
Cobblers, the diff seal was done 2 weeks after the warranty became active so that blows your theory.

It matters not one iota, if you get on well with your dealer, as I do, then the remap won't cause any issues IN MY EXPERIENCE

No, i'm suggesting the work you've had done so far is not something that has cost them an awful lot. Balanced against what they recoup through your premiums, they are better off keeping you as a customer. The diff seal may have blown 2 weeks after you started the policy, but they are not expecting most people to dump the policy after two weeks.

The extent of investigative work and due diligence they will carry out is clearly going to increase significantly at the point a claim will be well in excess of any premium they may recoup from you. I hardly think that is cobblers, its common sense. You make a £5k claim, any company worth its salt will look at that and try to wriggle out of paying. And a remap will be the prime candidate to blame. You must be a fabulous customer for your dealer, that they would lie to BMW's insurance underwriters when they ask "was the vehicle modified".

The extent of your experience is you've had a few minor claims, thats it. If you honestly think they wont care, tell them about the remap. Full disclosure would only help your position should a claim arise. But I suspect they will exclude your engine and drive train from the policy. Or you will be forced to purchase a policy which covers remaps, but has a significantly higher premium.

Of course both you and your dealer could lie to them should the worst happen. They probably wont catch you. Then again if they do, your dealer can shut up shop and good luck buying any other insurance/warranty again.

Oh and lets not forget your insurance company, many of them will care if you've remapped/modified the vehicle.
