Hi,

I've just purchased (on tuesday so still very much a newbie) an E60 535D, which I'm delighted with. Planning to get her chipped very soon - probably Bluefin as I've been pleased with their results on other cars I've owned 9but would be interested in opinions from anyone on here who has had their 535 re-mapped)

last night I was searching on toutube and found a clip from a chap who says there's a "secret" sport mode available on the E60 (see link below)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooKbKNG7ddM

Does anyone know if this mod can also be done on the 535D? there only seems to be scant info on it on-line and it all seems to be for petrol engined cars. Any thoughts or comments would be gratefully received

The only Sport mode that I know of is the one you get when you knock the gear selector over to the left. That youtube video didn't convince me that there would be a hidden Sport mode, other than a symbol lighting up in the OBD.

I Sell used E60's for a living & as far as i know all the button will do is sharpen the throttle response giving you the impression that the car is developing more power.
The switch will improve throttle response and keep DTC/DSC active.

however, by holding in the DTC/DSC button in for 10 seconds, this has the same effect as the "Sport button". The only difference is it deactivates the DTC/DSC completely and sharpens the throttle response. I wouldn't recommend deactivating it on a wet day!

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply. what you say is very interesting. Purely by chance I was playing around with the DSC button last night (trying to see if I had the "Acceleration Assist" feature mentioned in the owner's book under SMG gearbox) and I inadvertently turned everything off.

I happened to gun it away from a junction just after that and - wow. It was off like a scalded cat!

I think I will do the switch mod, as I liked the way the car went last night but would like to keep DSC/DSM. As you rightly say, highly preferable in wet conditions

Ref BlueFin- did my 535d a couple of years ago, seemed a fair improvement in general performance, fully loaded with luggage in the boot, still manages to ave 39mpg, about the same as before

Just got mine and fully plan to do this mod.

See here:
http://forums.5series.net/e60-discussion-2/way-e60...

Consensus is: It works. It does seem to depend on what type of steering you have. I have servotronic on mine, so should feel the effects in Sport mode going by that thread. It doesn't give anymore power, but it does give better throttle response.

I haven't yet reached the very end of that thread, but it does seem to be a great mod. I spoke to my local BMW dealer last week about the parts, and was told they are on back order and will take 2 weeks to arrive!

I would like to know if the ECU would report back that it had been in Sport mode if I were to have a warranty claim in the future, as I am considering taking out BMW extended warranty.

Hi - thanks for the replies. I'm definitely going to get the Bluefin - just waiting for september's paycheck to clear!

Concerning the switch mod, I've also seen the article mentioned above and have read through to about the 47th page. It does seem quite presuassive although in the later posts there is mention about needed to re-code various things including the autobox to get the full gains. I thinks they are talking about using the SMG settings?? There is also some debate about pre and post LCI cars, and the various observations.

I've decided to give it a go, and also not to use OEM parts, so I've ordered a neat looking momentary switch:

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/push-button-switches...

which has a blue anular illumination, which I think will look o.k.

Once I've done the mod I'll post up an un-biased view as to whether it's made any difference on my car - pre LCI 2005 535D M-Sport

I'm hoping it will sharpen things up to a similar level as when the DSC button is held for a few seconds and the "skid triangle" warning (my name for it, not official BMW terminology) comes up, but with the benefit of DSC/DSM still being enabled. For me, the car is dynamically much more "sporty" in that mode so that would be a significant result for those moments when the inner hooligan comes out to play

It's been a few days since I read it, but I thought the coding was for the post LCI cars?

I've got a Bluefin on mine. Works well.
I like the Bluefin as you can put the car back to standard within 15 minutes if required.

Yes, I think you are right. Seems like most if not all pre-LCI cars have shown clear benefits

My E61 LCI has Active Steering and Sport Automatic Transmission (i.e. it has the Sport mode button inboard of the gearlever as standard).

When the Sport button is pressed it makes the autobox shift quicker (in both D and S mode) and it also blips the throttle on downshifts when using 'Manual' mode within S.

I had a Z4 back along with the Sport button. On that car it sharpened the steering a bit (more resistance) and throttle response. Also quickened the gearbox shift (but my Z4 was an SMG).

On the Z4M the Sport button just increased throttle response - no change to steering as it was a hydraulic system not the electric assisted of the regular Z4. No change to the gearbox as all Z4Ms are manual smile
