I have an E85 3.0i with a FSH and 75k.

I went to use the car this morning (2.5 deg C) and it did not start. Turned over at the usual speed but did not catch. It sounded like it might occasionally. It started on the 3rd try and you could see the rev counter needle fluctuating slightly on fast idle.

It has since driven fine. I have used it recently in colder weather and started straight up as you wod expect.

Could this be a temp sensor not providing the info for a richer mixture or a crank position sensor?

Sorry, copy and paste from the Z4 site so should have stated it is a BMW Z4 if it is not obvious!

I'm no expert but it sounds like your auxiliary belt is worn.

Basically scrap it 'cause they cost a bomb to replace.

Does it have an electric fuel pump? Maybe that's starting to fail.

That's what happened on one of my cars and gave the same symptoms (but not a BMW).

I am going to see what happens tomorrow morning. Hopefully it was just a one off.

The previous time you used the car did you by any chance start it, move it a short distance on the drive and then turn it off? BMW 6-pots love to flood if you do that - especially in winter. The mixture is very rich from the cold start and when you switch off raw fuel can lie in the cylinders. This also washes oil off the bores causing loss of compression and making the flooded engine even harder to start.

I got caught when I moved a car to wash it. Next day it was a devil to get started.

No, I am really OCD about that!

If any of the fleet is started from cold then they are driven until up to temperature before switching off. Makes the quick trip to the shop less than quick but rather that then have issues!

Thanks for the reply though as it may be the problem if someone else has an issue.

How can a worn aux. belt cause a starting problem? Curious...

Unless he actually means a cam belt which, of course, is not fitted to this engine.

It really could be any number of things. My suggestion is get a code reader on it.

Started absolutely perfectly this morning.

Great for using it but not for fault diagnosis!
