Looking for an E61 550i touring - where can I find one??
Discussion
After there being loads on the market and drooling for months SWMBO has given me the thumbs up.
Suddenly the market is bare!
Looking for a sensible miles facelift 550i sport touring - not a single one for sale.
Anywhere obvious I should be looking?
Monitoring autotrader, ebay and gumtree at the moment.
Would also consider a facelift 530i manual touring but there is none of those either!

No connection to seller http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/for-sale/search/bmw/... depends what you call 'sensible miles'!

That large petrol will cost you around 2k extra per year in fuel. Glad that makes sense to you!!
Are you on the right forum?!Don't know what he's biasing it on, unless a 520d. Against my 535d, I'd expect 1k max.
I would have gone petrol as well although nothing available when I needed to buy.

Yeah, the majority are pre LCI...
If you're after a pre LCI manual have a word with Hornetrider on here ;-)
Personally, I think they suit the auto great.. The auto boxes in pre and post LCI are essentially the same, the LCI just has done away with the manual link on the shifter.
So its looking like a waiting game or a non LCI then.If you're after a pre LCI manual have a word with Hornetrider on here ;-)

What do you mean by 'manual link'

There's less than 10mpg in it comparing a 535d against a 550i and only a few mpg difference between 535d and 535i (using dodgy autotrader figures). So VED is more on petrol, but life is too short! Having spent the last 6 years with diesels, it's time to go back to petrol. Well I got a year to find one before my current car goes back.I've had a E61 550i (manual) and a E61 530d (auto). The 550i was only 5mpg or 6mpg worse like for like on any comparable drive. In fact I only kept the 530d a few months, replaced it with the V8 after being so disappointed with the diesel mpg. For all the difference it was, I wanted the V8 and found 1 of 7 manual M Sport Tourings

How did you work that one out? If someone is looking for a 550i they will no doubt go 535d fi they go diesel.
My 535d returned 26.9mpg over the 18 months and 45000 miles I did in it.
The LCI model I was seeing 33mpg.
The 550i will average around 24mpg pre lci and 27mpg post.
If we take the lci cars as there is a bigger gap, that is going to cost someone who is doing 11k miles a year....
£1942 in fuel for the 550i.
£1740 for the 535d.
I think you mean £200 a year not £2000.
Or £3.80 a week.
And people say the person who buys the 370bhp 550i is the fool? I would argue it is the other way round.
I don't think the LCI 550i will do 3mpg more than the pre-LCI..
It's the same engine and gearbox, no mechanical changes. The gearbox may have slightly different software that can be uploaded to the pre.. Mine for example has a 2009 gearbox software update.
There software will be something that fools the official mpg 'test' with no real world differences.
The LCI 535d got the completely updated engine that appeared in the 335d, hence economy improvements in that.
My 335d managed around 32mpg, my 550i does 22! But I do drive this harder..

I've no experience of the 540 E60 but it was brought in roughly the same time as the 550i and jointly they replaced the 545...
306hp but it's not got a huge amount of torque at 288lbft.. It would always leave me wondering about the 550.. 370hp and 370lbft is substantially more and I can't see the MPG's being that much worse.
The newer engines apparently received some upgrades over the older 4.4 in 545i, specially to the stem seals which are a very expensive niggle!
