E90 335d - blue smoke
Discussion
My 118k mikes 335d has over the past week started with a large puff of blue smoke.
This is only on start up after being left for a couple of hours. No blue on revving it once started.
The car has had new glow plugs and controller about 15k miles ago, also had the DPF cleaned 4k mikes ago the red intercooler hose is covered in oil at the moment. Has probably been like that for 6 months.
Am I looking at a turbo problem here ?

Thanks to those that contributed.
Even with the warmer weather this blue smoke still exists.
Can has gone through roughly a litre of oil (assuming that that is the difference between min and max on the dipstick) in the past 2k miles.
Spoke to my usual indy earlier and he suspects a turbo problem but cannot look at it for another week.
Will update when the diagnosis is in !

Ouch that's not normal at all. Even with the warmer weather this blue smoke still exists.

Both of my BMWs have not used any oil in over 60k miles

That's using a lot of oil for it to be valve stem seals/guides. Mine had 160k on it and used to puff blue in the morning, so I sold it .
I would suspect a turbo, with the DPF and cats absorbing the worst of it once engine is hot.
Damn..I would suspect a turbo, with the DPF and cats absorbing the worst of it once engine is hot.
Need to use it 50 miles daily as well so leaving it parked up until the Indy can sort it is not an option.
It had the dpf cleaned 6 months ago.
Thanks - I think I may have to trade it in earlier than I thought.

Get a price to fix as that will give you another 160k miles life and also increase its market value/not materially reduce it. Need to use it 50 miles daily as well so leaving it parked up until the Indy can sort it is not an option.

What would it cost? £1-1.3k for a car with all else good... You'd lose far more than that flogging a needing work car

How old are the air filter and the crankcase breather?
Air filter changed just before Christmas (4 months ago).Crankcase breather not done. It's a vortex type on these afaik.
@WB £1k I can deal with but if it is turbo plus cat and dpf it is going to be a lot more than that.

Dealers don't care about faults or even ask about them. The car will be heading straight to auction.

You've obviously never traded a car in before then....

As it turns out when I've never been in a position to need to change a car when something failed on it as such whatever bit needing replacing was so when the cars were traded in no issue. Dealers don't care about faults or even ask about them. The car will be heading straight to auction.
Also from memory most have been sold with near on full MOT, fairly recently serviced and very healthy tyres - I don't run a car with less than 3mm.
Have sold previous cars to friends family & traded in knowing they were very well looked after.
Just to come back to this in case it helps anyone in the future.
The car was in a couple of weeks ago.
They suspected that a couple of faulty glow plugs were causing incomplete combustion and smoke on startup - these were changed under warranty.
The red intercooler hose which had been covered in oil for some time was also changed.
Smoke on start up has gone completely, and the power is back too.
Whilst it was there I also had the rear shocks, a ball joint and arms replaced. Expensive to do in relation to the value of the car but I plan on keeping it for another 12 months/20k miles and it is so much more comfortable and composed now.
I love my Indy ! - well known in BMW circles . . . in Amersham, Bucks.
