Whichever comes first.
You would think so wouldn't you!Except that I've now just called BMW and it's the mileage you go on. The date is just an estimate of when it thinks you will arrive at that mileage.
So my car will have it's first oil service at 18,000 miles.
Seems a long time from new, but there you go!

Don't listen to the CBS.
There is no way a car should go 18k without an oil change.
You mean like this M5? http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...There is no way a car should go 18k without an oil change.

That's even worse. Also just because they have done loads between services doesn't mean the engine's not fuubaard

The oil service will be at whatever comes first, the date is not an estimate. This service is done every 2 years even if you don't do the mileage.Except that I've now just called BMW and it's the mileage you go on. The date is just an estimate of when it thinks you will arrive at that mileage.

Whoever you spoke to at the dealer is mistaken.

As others have said, ignore the CBS recommendations if you want your car to last. Oil&filter every 10k miles/1 year.
I suspect that may have been true in the past but with advances in oil and metallurgy I think the 10k oil change went out with the ark (I certainly didn't have any problems with my last 335d following the condition-based servicing).helix402 said:

BMW would be covered in lawsuits if CBS didn't perform. The cars have a design lifetime of ten years and 200,000 km (125,000 miles).
They are designed to run ok in 45C Saudi Arabia heat, 5,000 feet
up in the US Rockies and run flat out all day every day on the German
autobahn. A tootle around the M25 at 70 mph in light drizzle shouldn't be
too much trouble ;->
I guess if you plan to go well beyond the design lifetime, then
changing the oil more frequently might help, but it's usually not
the core of the engine that causes terminal failure in cars.

I totally agree with this. I'm always baffled by what seems to be prevalent in the US where they seem to change their oil nearly as often as they fuel up.The cars have a design lifetime of ten years and 200,000 km (125,000 miles).

If you plan on keeping your car for the remainder of your life, perhaps its a good option. But in my eyes, I'll follow the manufacturers guidelines rather than needlessly throw money down the drain.
My advice is based on servicing BMWs since 1994. If owners leave the oil and filter for extended intervals the oil filter sometimes collapses/disintegrates bad things happen etc. With the prevelance of timing chain/tensioner failures etc on modern BMWs it is still wise for long term engine life to change oil and filters frequently.
But we all have different ideas and that's the joy of an open forum.

To go back to the OP, my 5-series is telling me I have 12k to go to the next service and next to it says 'July 2016'. That July date is the next MOT; it tells you what the next item is in the schedule, not simply the service date. I imagine the 1-series gives similar info. Have a look in the iDrive at the vehicle info section.

I've looked on iDrive - and for me the only service item showing the date Dec 15 is the oil service which is also saying in 9000 miles. That is the same information in the central binnacle screen on start-up.All other service items are at least another year away according to iDrive.
