Hi guys,

Basically, sitting at traffic lights and stop start kicks in. When I start the engine again I hear what sounds like a brick smashing under the car. Battery light comes on. I manage to get home with no dramas what so ever. I leave it til the morning and check to see whats happened. The belt is dislodged from the pulleys (with no damage to the belt what so ever) and the crankshaft pulley is on the bottom of the car. I managed to rotate all the pulleys apart from this one. It appears seized and i reckon thats why the rubber is stuck round it and ripped off? Any ideas on what could have happened or causes it to seize? Or roughly what im looking at price wise?

This is what was found on floor:

and heres a close up off the part still attached with bits of rubber still on ripped from the puley:

The crank pulley is on the crankshaft. That's the one that does the spinning and drives everything else. The reason why you can't turn it is because it's the engine.

If the crank has seized, you've got a lot more problems to deal with.

Oh, so the shaft thats still on the car doesnt actually turn?

What do you reckon could have caused this? (As you can probably tell im useless with this stuff)

That shaft turns alright, it IS the engine; that's the bit that turn the gearbox and wheels, and is attached to all of the pistons.

The rubber is for vibration and damping, and they can get old, crack and tear and fall off.

Oh!

So would you say its a costly job to have repaired?

It's not a massive job, just need to change the pulley.

You can see part of the 4 bolts in the middle. The pulley might be expensive, and it can be hard to undo the bolts, but it is pretty straight forward in theory.

To give you an idea of cost OP,

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/BMW_3+Series_2.0...

plus a hours labour to replace it, assuming the bolts all come undone without issue.

Which Indy did you use? I have been quoted approx. £350 for an E46 320d.

Cheers

[EDIT now quoted an hours labour so will come to a similar total]
