Driving on a motorway the wipers parked mid screen and stopped working in all modes on my 2009 5 series touring.
Rear wiper is working fine.
Wipers also don't work on wash/wipe function.
Has anyone similar experience, I checked all fuses which are fine.

Any ideas welcome.

Probably th wiper relay. I had one fail in my old e39.

You just need to Googlefu where it is and swap it out.

Dave,

Thanks, I tend to agree with you but finding it is a bit more difficult.

I've lifted the pollen filter but is not obvious how to get to the EMU.

On the E39, this is also a symptom of the ignition switch failing. Accompanied by other random electrical gremlins. Could be worth changing. (although realise yours is not an E39)

Miniman,

Thanks, but the ignition on/off button seems to working perfectly. Just wipers not functioning.

Ah, not familiar with the later 5 series, my E39 had a standard ignition barrel with key.

Randomly, my grandfather's name was Nobby Clarke.

Not unusual though, Nobby being the standard nickname for someone called Clark or Clarke.

I would think that many of us know someone called so.

Nobby. I had a wiper parking problem recently and ended up removing, degreasing and reassembling the wiper motor.

In the course of googling the problem I think I'm right in saying that the wiper relay is in the driver's side underneath the pollen filter, and is beige. You need to get all the plastic gubbins out to get to it which looks fairly catastrophic but is actually straightforward.

How is your Google fu getting on?

Hi
Thanks, on a previous search it was shown on the near side, I will look on off side.

Thanks for the tip.

Update,

Checked on offside it doesn't seem likely the EMU is on that side, back to nearside.

I have purchased a Creator C310 Multi System Diagnostic Scan Tool, I was hoping to check if the wiper relay was faulty, however it is not obvious that it can check the Wiper system. If anyone has any experience of using this tool to do so, help would appreciated.

Many thanks

Dude. Its on the offside.

http://burgertuning.com/instructions/JB4PnP.pdf

Check out P8-14 for how to access it. Its the brown relay in the pic. As I mentioned you have to take the plastic gubbins off that support the microfilters.

Update on wipers.

I found the wiper relay on the near side, bought a new one from Dealership and replaced the old relay.

Sadly no change, wipers stay in parked position.

Welcome any other suggestions!!

You've replaced the wrong relay. It's in the ECU box on the offside.

Hi

When I removed all the plastic covering on both sides, the ECU box is on the near side on RHD cars, the part number is 6136-8 384 505, lots of other threads quote this as the relay.

However welcome other views.

Nobby, I'd admit defeat and take it to a garage. It's pissed it down for the last week, how have you been managing?

Dave,

That is my plan, but after over 30 years driving I've never known a wiper motor to go, especially on a reasonably low mileage car. So it should be simple.

I've driven my other car but would prefer to drive the E61.

Many thanks

Nobby
