Really hankering after a 330d for an 80 mile commute on motorways. Have a 5k budget and don't care too much for anything sporty looking. Can I get a good one?

My mum has one which I have driven. It has been totally reliable and has a good powertrain. Not the sharpest car to drive but what recent BMW is?

I would definitely recommend it.

My 325D is on 90mph and the gearbox has been good.
We have several 330D's at work, some with well over 100k and we've only had issues with 3 gearboxes, 2 the gear change was quite aggressive, it wroth hold revs high and then lunge into the next gear, or go down a gear quite harsh.
The 3Rd lost the ability to use DS and manual mode

Ahhh ok thanks guys, i'll test drive one soon hopefully. I drive an old fabia vrs at the moment so i'm confident it'll drive better than that! 325d's are tempting as well tbh!

We took a 2006 E90 330d from 3k miles to 157k miles over a six year period and it was faultless and a great car, they are a very good all round car so much so that we now have a 2006 E90 330i.

The 330d feels quicker though and offers miles better economy so a great choice I think.

I've had one for nearly 5 years and 40k miles. 2006 231hp model. Totally reliable only servicing and consumables needed.

Very quick everyday car and will return 45+ mpg on a 70mph cruise.

Oh and it's forsale soon smile

I've had one from 11k to 123k currently.
Last 30k in the past year as now used a daily commuter, 100 motorway miles daily.

Remapped to around 290bhp when I got it.
40k slight oil leak + swirl flaps £400
60k camshaft sensor £100
90k EBC discs and pads £500
93k turbo replaced/oil service £1100

Regular oil changes (£120) every 10k miles after the turbo was fitted.
Additional £1.6k over regular servicing is not bad over 6yrs and probably cheaper than having a warranty.

I went for the 325D as I couldn't find a 330 with the spec I wanted

I bought an e90 330d about a year ago and have covered almost 20k. The car was on 65k when I bought it, and below is approximately what I've spent on it.

Service and check over when I first bought is about £220.
Remap £500 (287/490 averaging 41/42 mpg)
4x new tyres £455
Alignment £80
New thermostats £70
New EGR cooler £450
New pads all round and front disks about £240
New fuel filter £25
New thermostats again £70
Service, brake fluid change and a new rear caliper at BMW £754

Future costs, the wheels are due a refurb and one has a slight crack which is common, prob £360-400, the rear tyres are down to sub 4mm, so probabably replace those at the same time as the wheel refurb, and the drive shaft flex coupling has started to split so I'll have that done, prob £100-150 maybe.

So, no it hasn't been a particularly cheap year but bearing in mind I am doing almost 20k a year.

I like the car, downsides are the ride quality on the Msport is rough, but even the SE's are not what I'd call comfortable so I'd still go for the Msport.

Spec wise, go for leather, Pro Nav and xenons. Mines an Auto which is showing its age a it against the more modern 8 speed ZF boxes nowadays.

Good cars the 330d, an although I'd say mine has been fairly dependable they can cost a bit to keep in good order and there are some dog rough examples out there.
