I know this may sound like a stupid question but can someone tell me about SMG. How good is it, how do you use it? would you go for SMG over manual & why?

Cheers

FOr mortals, i.e. 99.9% of us, SMG means quicker gear changes on road and track. I have grown to love it, having also had a manual M3. You really need to borrow an SMG car for at least a few hours to begin to be able to decide.

I'll second that, had a '52 M3 Manual and now have an '04 SMG. Loved both cars but for sheer rapidness and race car genes go for the SMG!

What is the SMG on the M3 Evo like then?

I have no experience, but everyone says that the first generation SMG on the M3 Evo was terrible.

Not everyone says that, e.g., see here:

But there are certainly a number of cars that have had no end of problems with it. As a result, I think SMG prices tend to be lower than manuals (unless you find a rare car with the BMW warranty still active), as they definitely seem harder to sell.
