Hi

I am thinking of what to do in a few months when my dull merc e220d goes back at the end of its contract hire.

One alternative is to buy a more interesting 2 year old car for about 25k and run it forever.

So I had decided on a 535d, probably 2015 which looked like it would do everything i needed. Then my wife decided we should have petrol instead as diesel is bad for you!

Trouble is there are no 535is!! Do they ever come up?! I see there are a load on auc new at 40k. Maybe i should contract hire for 2 years and then get one of them?!

Where do i get one!

They do come up occasionally, but only very occasionally. Perhaps contact your local dealer and put an alert on Auto Trader and maybe Ebay.

Thanks. Theres a 2011 one on ebay at 19k which looks like it hasn't sold before as there is a previous ebay ad. A bit old for me i think. Any known problems with these? Any 550i tourings ever seen?!

That Ebay example has been advertised before, a month or so ago I think. Over the last few months I was giving serious thought to a 6 or 8 cylinder petrol 5 Series estate before deciding to order a new Focus ST estate instead. I spent a lot of time reading through the E61 V8 thread which is a decent source of info.

550s do come up, I understand that F11s are pretty much unicorns, but E61s are regularly advertised. The above thread tends to get updated with Ebay and AT ads within a day or so of them being offered.

Try persuading your wife that diesel isn't that evil! The pollution reduction systems on the facelift 535d are EU5 and reasonably clean. I've just bought an AUC F11 535d M sport and I think it's great. Even after a Boxster GTS it's laugh out loud fast(yes really) and I'm enjoying it.
If not a 535i would still be a good laugh. Are you looking for an SE spec or M sport?

Horses for courses, but I much prefer the 535i over the 535d. 35d is quick, but dull, whereas the 35i has a nice bit of zing to it.

Thanks both. The diesel debate is an open and shut case! So the 535i it will be. If i can find one!

I don't think i will have a choice of spec. Seeing as there are literally none for sale that i can see at the moment i will buy whatever i can find!

Have you tried the 535d? Lovely engine, quick yet refined, and frugal too. Best of all, loads of supply so should be possible to find the spec you desire.

I am sure it is great. As I said before diesel is banned in our household now. My wife has some other health issues so is not thinking logically.

Yes could do. But i am coming out of am e class estate. I now seem to have smaller car worry. How will i fit all my crap in the boot?! So my thinking was that a 5 series is a little bit smaller but not too much!

I owned an F11 535i Msport.
Once I decided I wanted one it took me 8 months to buy one.
During that time, only 3 came up for sale;
Jobbo on here bought the first,
The second was a manual with very low spec (I think the F11 suits an auto), and
I bought the third one!

Good luck with your search - be prepared to jump when the right car comes up.

I had an E61 550i. I went to look at an F31 and the boot as near as dammit is the same size. Granted it's no E class but it's probably bigger than you think.

Yes thanks i saw that. I still have a few months left on my contract hire so its too early. I also wanted a slightly newer car. What is the received wisdom on a low mileage earlier model. No real difference to buying a later model? I was thinking just in warranty.

I've ended up in an F31, the boot is definitely smaller than the F11 but it's a much more enjoyable drive albeit not as luxurious.

What about a F36 435i/440i.........??

Quite a cavernous load space area, and you see quite a few around too, so should be able to find a few on AUC to choose from...???

They are virtually impossible to find. Unless you get very lucky and are completely open regarding colour and spec you are not going to get a good petrol F10/F11. They are virtually all diesel. Frankly if you are fussy on spec and colour combinations even finding a 6 cylinder diesel is a big challenge - it took me almost 9 months to find the right car.

90% of these are 520d frown
