Can someone give me an insight to this idea I've had please,

As the E90 320d engine (N47) is the same as the 123d engine, could the sequential twin turbo and manifold intake system off the 123d bolt straight onto the 320d head? With aid of a software update top obviously!

Just an idea as the throttle response on my 320d sport plus (184) could do with a bit of a kick!

I believe the Alpina D3 used the 4-cyl twin turbo engine, so I assume it fits a RHD engine bay.

I therefore might just be cheaper to trade your existing car in for one of those.

Get the 330i or 330d version? It'll be cheaper and bound to be generally a better idea

Just get yours remapped. They respond well to it and it'll make a very noticable difference.

BMW must have fitted the twin turbos to the 123d just for fun, if they could have made the same power with just a remap.

From 184bhp (320d sport plus) to a whooping 204bhp (123d).... You're telling me ANY tuner couldn't get a theoretical 20bhp?

Right.......
hehe

It would be interesting to see if this project could work. The twin turbo setup in the 123d is one of the most impressive diesel engines I've tried. You could maybe get a remap to a similar power but I doubt it will have the flexibility and responsiveness of the twin turbo setup.

When you hate diesel engines so much you can't even bring yourself to type the word correctly. hehe

He feels he has to slag off BMWs at every opportunity, content isn't important, just quantity.

I know id obviously gain more than the standard 123d bhp (204) with a good map but I was leaning more towards the throttle response and power usage aspect of the Intake system rather than the power gain.

Swapping the intake systems is just an idea that I am curious about how easy it could be done, as if it can be done easily and paird with a good map the power and response would theoretically be a lot better.

This is where my idea stems from, pairing this turbo setup with a high standard remap could end up being brilliant

Definitely getting a remap at some point regardless of the 123d intake system debate, any advice on reliable BMW diesel remap supplier?

Just been looking to see if my old tuning box was still in the cupboard, you could have had it, but it's not.
My auto 07 320d was much improved with the box installed, I'd recommend trying one, mpg, power and noticeably smoother, DTUK was the supplier.

I did explore the route of a tuning box as mentioned by a friend but after some research and a good reply from another pistonheads member on a separate thread ( https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=76... ) I decided against it

Just get a 330d. Faster, nicer to drive, doesn't sound quite so much like a tractor, and, unmodified, will be worth more than 3pence when you're finished with it.

In fact, get a 335i, sod the economy!

I got mine tuned at AMD in Essex. Wasn't cheap, but it was faultless for a couple of years and they did a dyno/rollingroad, wasn't a tuning box. It was around 215 hp.

I think the 123d is a lot better, but I really wouldn't bother with all the effort of putting a twin turbo setup on, you also have to consider manifold, exhaust, perhaps the injectors and fuel pump are different - check realoem.

As others have said, quick software map then change for a 330d and you will enjoy that a lot more.

You can get an easy 210-220BHP from an x20d engine.

We'd a tuning box on my sons 120d M Sport, and it made an amazing difference to it.

A 123d should remap to around 250BHP ish

I'd get it remapped by one of the reputable tuners or a tuning box fitted. They work surprisingly well for a plug in module. We've used Bluespark a number of times and they're boxes arent expensive.

I would have thought it would be cheaper to sell the car and buy a more powerful one than try to merge a 123d setup into yours.
