Has anyone used these online update services such as:

http://bmwupdates.co.uk

http://www.bmwnavi.co.uk

or any other recommendations? Alternative is to give £150 to BMW for their USB stick and software but if these £40 places are the same, would rather go for that

I would not trust them to be honest.

Considering these are 3rd party software updates from people that do not appear to have a VAT number, no business address shown and very limited contact information.

The one that allows you to pay via PayPal would be the one I would use if I had no choice as there is some protection.

Even then not sure how much protection it gives if the software is faulty etc, also not sure how BMW will behave if it goes wrong.

If it was me either make do with the current version of the map software, or buy the update from BMW themselves.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Got my (Lifetime) FSC code and map update from a well known poster on E90post.com

Take a scan through the old threads, you'll soon see who is doing the most and who is reliable.
Easy, if time consuming to do. Did mine over 3 x USB sticks on a long run. Had the laptop in the car, as there was a bit of file name changing to do as I was only using the one stick 3 times.
If you have to stop the car, the update continues when you restart - you don't need to start again.

On E90 post there is a thread on how to get your FCS code for free using a USB stick and a piece of software someone developed.

Then use a link to download the latest maps and use the code.

I did it several times and never had any issues
Plus.....it's free

I would never trust a 3rd party as far as car software is concerned. You use their software and basically give them control of your car - they can hack it or do whatever.

No advisable.

It is only some software, doubt anyone would do anything malicious if you buy from a trusted place.

£150 is steep, was about £80 for the complete professional Europe maps for the X5, albeit it is DVD's and not a USB. Likely because of how complicated it is, the USB updates firmware in the HDD of the iDrive but DVD's are simply inserted into the drive on CCC iDrive systems.

USB update is fine, have heard many people do it themselves/not from BMW and no issues.
