Trying to work out the best oil for F30. Got a 320d and looking at Castrol 5W-30 C3 stop start. Is this necessary for a stop start engine as euro car parts are showing standard Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 and other branded oils too. Halfords were going on about 5W-30 oils only being compatible with with cars that use a ACEA A3 B3/B4 fuel efficient product. Just unsure if i'm looking too much into it or the standard oil coming up on euro car parts would be sufficient.

This car must have ACEA C3 oil such as the Castrol you mentioned. The "stop/start" specification is not a requirement.

Do not use the ACEA A3 B3 B4 that you saw in Halfords.

The viscosity can be 0w30, 5w30 or 5w40 as you choose.

You can use any reputable brand as long as it has the ACEA C3 specification, it does not have to be Castrol.

I thought they had to adhere to the BMW LL04 specification and not just the ACEA spec....

Ended up going for Shell Engine Oil (Helix Ultra ECT (C3) Engine Oil - 5W-30 - 5ltr) and noticed that it meets the BMW LL04 specification also. ALso purchased a MANN-FILTER oil filter. This seems to be a popular choice.

Sebringman, you are right. I only realised I had omitted LL-04 after I had posted. In my own defence I would say that oils that meet the C3 standard also seem to meet the LL-04 standard, and vice versa. (This is just an observation of mine from buying oil and is not based on any evidence).

I might add a little warning about buying oil for a BMW: Before LL-04 came along BMW had an earlier specification called Longlife-98 or LL-98. Some oil companies still print LL-98 on their bottles even though that standard is superceded and it is easy for the casual customer to be mislead and to buy a LL-98 oil in the belief that it is suitable for a modern BMW.

You would be surprised what incredulous folk at motor factors try just to make a sale

I once tried to get gearbox oil for my Stag, which takes non Dextron based gearbox oil, also known as Ford Type F or G. The big difference being the latter does not have friction modifiers present to work with modern clutch packs.

A salesman told me :Dextron is the supersession for Type G unitl my persistance paid off ; he eventually came out with a bottle of Type G....
