Terrible tyres
Discussion
spare tyre, jack or tyre weld, I replaced my runflats and also enjoying the slightly more forgiving ride, so not to add any weight I'm going with the tyre weld lol, no idea why people feel the need to contact insurance companies for its just a change of tyre isn't it? an optional extra at the dealers?? Chances are Avon's may not be much good though, or do they do an expensive range?
I bought an E46 17" steel space saver, which fits over my 130i front brakes. Found that a new aftermarket one was actually cheaper than a used one on ebay. Then bought a used bmw jack and tyre wrench, cheaply on ebay, and brand new space saver tyre - very expensive, unfortunately; no way round that one. If you buy a used E46 space saver and tyre, then, my advice is to scrap the tyre and buy a new one. The original will likely be around 15 years old, and that is dangerous, even if it's never been used. E46 space savers don't fit all beemers, due to differing offsets. Check compatibility first.
Two other options:
1. go to main dealer and buy a new alloy space saver and tyre. Nice and light, but very expensive. Even used, they go for top money.
2. cheapest, and heaviest, option of all, is to buy a full size alloy and newish tyre for your car, used on ebay. You lose at least four inches of boot depth, though.
Think I read somewhere there's also an issue of something having to be changed on the car itself, maybe a sensor or a valve sensor, or something. It didn't affect me, as the E87 1 series didn't have them, whatever they are. Maybe someone else can shed some light.

I'm planning to go for non-RFTs on my E86 soon as the general concensus seems to be to ditch the RFTs!
Plan A) - I bought 2 cans of Tyreweld and a compressor.
Plan B) - I bought a 17" spacesaver (needs 17" to clear the front brakes), a BMW jack and a wheel-brace.
Plan C) - Recently renewed my RAC membership!

Do BMWs still ship with jacking points? My 2013 Mini has plastic blanking plugs where the jacking points should be and they are £5 each from the dealer.
Don't know about brand new BMW models today, but my 2005 E87 1 series has jacking points, and it came with runflats from the factory as standard.Thank you everybody for your inputs, very helpful.
The Avon tyres I have ordered are Avon ZV7 for the fronts and ZZ5 for the rears. Looked at some feedback from other users of these tyres and all bar one gave very positive results. TBH
I drive like an young pensioner, well that’s what I am, I don’t really need the best high performance tyre. The Avon’s are reported to be a good all round (bad pun) road tyre, I will find out and either be regretting or pleased, either way I will post up my thoughts on them.
Total cost £375 for the four tyres fitted with balance, valves, disposals.

Hi, how did your Avons perform? i am interested in replacing my RFTs
I know you are enquiring with OP but I now have a 335i not 330i and needed tyres, so fitted with non runflat Avons on the rear, there is significant extra power with this car as it has a jb4 thingy on it too, no idea of the figures but its definitely more lively than my e46 m3 I used to have and the tyres cope with the extra power just fine, Im sure 200 quid Pirellis may be better but I payed £120 each for these, just my observations that's all.Fwiw...when i got my new car 4 years ago the run flats were awful after several weeks I changed to michelin pilot ps3s and run them for 3 years ..excellant...this year I thought as I was thinking of handing the car back re PCP(I didnt) I would replace with run flats..I really hit google and all the forums....there seemed to be a clear winner goodyear eagle assymetric 3's......with real trepidation I pulled away from the tyre shop wondering if I had made a ricket. They are very good so good I would never bother going back to normal.
