Just wanted to sanity check a potential diagnosis for my poorly 530d (2006/56).

It's been steadily losing power over the last couple of days but is pretty much useless now; struggles up even shallow inclines, next to no power and drinks diesel. It also sounds like a tractor (growly/rattling, with a clear pressurised air noise on throttle). There's black soot all over the engine mount by the turbo and all over the tensioner for the DPF-to-turbo clamp, although the turbo itself is relatively clean.

So, my initial though is a knackered exhaust manifold. Sound reasonable?

I've checked the hoses to the intercooler just as precaution; had one of those disconnect before, but the sound was different to the current racket.

Even a fairly large leak from the manifold wouldn’t normally result in Such a loss of power as you describe. Sounds more like a blocked up dpf which is then choking up ur engine- would explain the spot around the exhaust clamp on the back of the turbo as it’s just forcing it out. Open your oil filler cap whilst it’s running and see if your getting a lot of exhaust gas coming from there.

The tube to the dpf pressure sensor has been known to clog up which stops the engine from doing regens on the dpf as it’s not getting a reading, the sensors themselves have been known to go wrong too.

If u leave it then soon you won’t even be able to start the car.

Hmmm, hope it's not that. yikes Cheers for the reply either way, though! smile

If it offers any ray of hope, I had a DPF clog up before and I got the 'Particulate Filter' warning come up every time I started that car. I changed it December 2016, albeit with a 2nd hand unit from a breaker, but that had only done 65k miles (my failed one died fully at 132k).

I appreciate it doesn't vouch for the quality of the one from the scrappies, but I've had no warnings this time.

Turned out it was some horrible shenanigans relating to the EGR system; a number of hoses and plastic components had melted and the pressure loss was from there. A small fortune later and all is well again......well, those bits are. biggrin
