BMW E92 320D TURBO ISSUES
Discussion
Hi guys,
I've recently been having turbo issues with my E92. Initally when i used to put my foot down there was a delay in the turbo kicking in, used to kick in around 3 1/2 k revs. Took it to my local mechanic, he said my egr valve needed replacing and that my turbo was slightly damaged. He replaced my egr and said some turbo cleaner could do the trick and clean my turbo. He also removed the dpf as it was completely blocked. As soon as he replaced the egr the car drove like a dream for a month or so and then started losing power again. I did also put forte turbo cleaner in which i don't think made any difference. Now the turbo has started whining and the car hardly pulls when i put my foot down. I think my turbo is nearly knackered. Is anybody based in the north west who could take a look and give me a quote on a new/refurbished turbo? Also car could do with a service.
Thanks

Dont expect much change from £1500. How many miles has the car got on it? How often are you doing oil changes? The long intervals quoted by BMW are great for people leasing the cars, great for fleets of them, but for people who ideally want to run the car for longer, changing the oil at half the interval might be better in the long run (and always using oil which meets or exceeds BMW's specifications).

Okay - some real advice here:
Get a quote from Midland Turbo, Turbo Technics and Essex Turbo. They will provide you with a refurbished (good as new) turbo for less than £400 + your knackered unit in part exchange.
Go to BMW and get a new oil feed pipe, this is essential because it's often blocked which starves the turbo of oil and causes it to fail.
Go to Eurocarparts or Opie Oils and buy replacement oil & oil filter.
Either fix it yourself or take the car to a mechanic and get it fixed. 5 hours labour tops if they have the correct tools & ramp. Otherwise, ask the mechanic to supply parts listed above and complete job.
Replacing a turbo should be an easy thing to do, but often they positioned behind or under the engine... the latter in your case. If you're mechanically minded, have a set of axle stands and half decent tool kit it's not that that tricky. One thing to bear in mind - check your intercooler for oil and drain if necessary.
Cost for DIY fix: less than £500.
Garage fix: approx. £750
