Hi All,

Looking to get some experiences from people who have hopefully had both types of drivetrains.
I have had my fair share of all cars, audis, merc, BMWS, fords, VX etc

Over the last 10 years its mostly been BMW and Merc and 2 Audi's.

I currently have a 335i and audi a7 BiTdi.
The A7 just doesn't inspire the same level of confidence of control like the 3 series. I know they are different cars however I did expect more from the Audi.

Even going around town you can start to feel the understeer of the Audi which doesnt of course happen in the BMW.

But more importantly I find the BMW more predictable so I know when it will kick the back end out etc I don't feel that in the Audi.

I guess the question is should they be driven differently or is it just the nature of the beast.
I dont want this to turn into a quattro/awd bashing thread, all drivetrains have their merits and uses.
Ps both cars are very well kept and have premium tyres

You’re doing something seriously wrong if you can feel understeer driving round town.

I can feel it going round roundabouts.
Thanks for your input.

I experienced similar when I had the Audi TTS because I'd been used to RWD. I thought the TTS would give me loads of confidence because of the quattro, yet I always felt more confident driving the Bmw's with RWD.

In the end I just accepted that the TTS wasn't much of a drivers car, and I adopted a slow and steady approach. Whereas I always felt more confident in the Bmw's because they always felt planted and you could trust them much more.

Strangely I thought the TTS would work far better without the AWD, and some reviews state that the FWD versions are better(not driven one though).

Hi cerb4.5lee

That seems to very much reflect my experience too. I alternate between using the two cars every two weeks or so and you can really feel the difference. I can go quite swiftly into a corner maintain a level of speed and punch it out in the BMW.

In the audi I feel a different style is required, its more of a slow right down before the bend, take the corner much more at ease and punch it out.

In saying that the BMW just feels so much more enjoyable to drive.
The audi is a great car, dont get me wrong but I did expect it to be up there in terms of enjoying the drive.

Tyres make a massive difference.

My sister's Saab was horrific on Kumhos and Toyos. On Landsails and Contis it is better but surprisingly the Landsails have a similar grip level to the Kumhos but they are far more progressive. The Contis on the back may be helping matters too!

I was going to bin the Landsails now and Goodyears/Michies will grip better but it's bearable as it is ; even my sister finds the handling way more confidence inspiring!

My boat of a W124 feels predictable but that is on Goodyears all round ; when the fronts came to £90 fitted it wasn't even worth considering budgets at that money.

My M3 on MPS4Ss is way more confidence inspiring than when it was on Falkens, not that they were bad. But I do have that impression it could let go badly. So far however at lowish speeds when being a little silly it has been great!

SebringMan very much agree with you, tyres are HUGE factor on feel/speed/confidence. I have Eagle F1's on the BMW and I have Dunlop Maxx GT (OEM) tyres on the Audi so I would like to think changing to new tyres on the audi would be some difference but might not be massive.

Both cars have excellent tread (min 5mm)

Have heard excellent things about the 4S tyres however at 1.2k to change them on a maybe is a bit much

It's not a RWD car, so the Audi is always going to understeer, and it will do so predictably. Which is great news for driving confidence. But not for fun.
