Hi,

Unfortunately my Audi S5 was hit by a truck last week. It's a write-off. Sad

Decided to replace with something slightly more economical but importantly fast paced. All fingers appear to point at the 435D....

Just a quick Q for any owners out there. Did you try both the coupe and the convertible? Oddly; its the only car i've ever seen and preffered the convertible though there's a good 200kg difference in weight and a clear difference in the 0-60 time.....which doesnt concern me too much (I dont imagine i'll be racing anyone at the lights in my 30's) But the 60-100 time IS what i'm interested in. I'd imagine with knocking on 500lbft of torque, the weight difference wouldnt matter too much.

Anyone wish to share their thoughts and/or experiences? smile

thanks

Z

I normally drive my 335d one up . At the weekend with the family and boot full of bags , so probably 200kg extra , there was a noticeable difference in performance . Indeed I thought something was wrong with it . 300 miles today by myself confirmed all is well , so must have been the weight

Yes I think a bit of a difference. I drove my F32 with passengers and luggage. It did feel less poky and I noticed it but nothing thr sport button could not resolve. Many 435d owners opt for a remap but I think it is not a bad car out of the box. Usually it is me driving alone and I have a 25kg sub/box that makes no difference to in terms of weight/performance.

Well I guess I’m probably well placed to give you some feedback.

I’ve just (in the last month) traded my b8 s4 for a 435d (albeit the gran coupe). My s4 was stage 1, tho I drove it for a year stock.

Stiock for stock the cars are very similar in performance, whilst I’d probably give s4 the nod for the win, it’d be very tight. The midrange torque of the 435d is certainly impressive, and it goes down the road well.

Now there’s still a bias towards my old s4 (still
Missing her) but as I said before, she was mapped and it’s an unfair comparison. One thing I can say categorically is that throttle response between the 2 is night and day, Tge 434d feels really laggy in comparison. I am really missing the instant shove of a supercharged engine. That Being said, I’m still getting used to driving not only a turbo car, but a diseasal as well. The other issue is sound, there no disguising the diesel lump, it doesn’t sound anything near as tuneful as the v6, didn’t think it would be bothersome but it is, tho I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

Now, it reads from what I’ve written that I’m not happy with the Bmw, but in truth ireally like it. The low down grunt is very impressive, so whilst the s4 was marginally quicker, it’d have to catch and pass the Bmw to take that win, and it would be in excess of nsl by the time it did that. I may very well get the car mapped in the future as it’s apparently a revelation, and it would be very interesting to see how it would have compared to the s4.

The handling is def rear biased, and even with the s4 having the rear diff, the Bmw feels a little more playful.

Another major plus for the Bmw is of course the economy, over 42 months of onwership I averaged 22.75mpg in the s4, with the majority of that driving normally to and from work, ferrying the kids etc. It always irritated me that even driving sedately my average sucked. In comparison, driving a bit more spiritedly, I’ve averaged 36mpg over the last 30 days (70/30) town/motorway - day to day driving has the big diseasal lump as the all round quicker (at legal speed limits), more economical, just as comfortable car.

The car is a lump tho, If the convertible adds a other 200kg, you’re going to notice that in all driving conditions, tho only you can decide how that makes YOU feel day to day. I personally recommend the car wholeheartedly, but it suits my young family / daily commute / budget etc whilst still giving me impressive performance / overtaking power.

Ps, sorry for the novel I’ve written.
