What a day.

So I was traveling to work this morning on the M62 around 7am, I was taking my time whilst I was 10 minutes early (for once) and was steady in the middle lane. Just as I hit the fast lane to overtake, the car infront of me ruined my morning. The guy basically hit some scrap metal in the road, which in turn kicked up and hit me.

I guess I can thank my lucky stars that I wasn’t too close to the guy infront as the metal hit me on the decline, although I’m still mortified as I’m due to receive five years no claims in one months time (I’m a young driver) and now I’ve been pushed back down to two.

How unfortunate is hitting motorway debris as no one is at fault other than the untraceable driver who put it there!!!!
The metal bar had impailed the headlight and wheel arch and pierced my Tyre.

I’ve got no idea of costs at the minute although my excess is only £400! My first ever accident and it could have been a scene off of final destination.

Greeeeeat :-(

Jesus...as for repair, get a second hand light and don't bother the insurance company assuming not xenons, even if it costs £5 -600 quid cheaper long term.

It’s rubbish isn’t it! I’ve never been in an accident before so was slightly niaeve on what to do!

I rang 101 to get the highway agency to clear the metal (it was an L shape when it hit me so I’m not sure where the other half is at the min) and I rang my insurance to get recovered :-(

I guess I know for next time, panic set in more than anything but I’m fortunate it didn’t go straight through my grills into the engine or more so the window screen!

Had a SLIGHTLY similar thing happen to me a couple of years ago, also on the 62.

Driving along minding my business in the right hand lane heading west near Goole, car in front swerves, I plough into a double extending ladder fully sideways in the 2nd & 3rd lane!!!!!!

Fortunately for me, I pulled over, could see no damage & turned out ok.

Rubbish I know, but it could have been alot worse.

I would try and keep the insurance out if possible. If you're handy with hand tools, or know someone who is, you could replace it all yourself.

I had someone kick up some nasty rocks and cause some nasty chips on my bonnet, gutted as I was just minding my own business and bang £300 of damage.

That sounds pretty terrifying to be fair.

The closest I've come to hitting debris on the motorway, or having it hit me even, was the undertray of an Audi in lane 1 detaching from the car as I pondered whether to overtake it or not. I was plenty far enough away when it shot out from underneath, but it looked like it was heading right for me. Then, as it cleared the car, it caught the wind and went just about vertical, I drove under it, and it then glided back down to earth and landed half in lane 2 and half in the central reservation behind me. I'd noticed the undertray flapping about a bit under the Audi as I'd approached, but thought it was attached by enough fixings to not fly off like that.

A neighbour of mine was in a bad mood when he came home the other day with a space-saver on his nearside front wheel. He showed me a 3 inch section of road spring that had broken off something else and driven itself into his tyre. That was at a relatively sedate 40 mph though, not motorway speeds.

Jeees ladders! Some of these stories are terrifying! I think you feel so indestructible in a car until you realize how much can switch in a matter of seconds. I keep saying ‘if only I’d of stayed in the middle lane, or if I’d have left to go for work at my normal time’ but it doesn’t really work like that, it’s just unfortunate!

I should receive a quote from my insurance before going ahead and deciding if I want to claim through them or pay myself, so it’s a waiting game until then.

Non Xenon new headlight: £140, new front tyre: (guessing 225/40/18) £100. These prices don’t include fitting.

That must have been really scary OP! eek

But looking at your photos it could have been so much worse.

I hope you manage to get your car sorted - ideally without having to make an insurance claim. thumbup

Friend of mine was driving down the M40 years ago early on a Monday morning. He saw the trailer of an articulated lorry (drawbar type?) come loose and move across Lane 1 to Lane 3 and fortunately it didn’t hit the central reservation. It then moved back to Lane 1 and went up the embankment eventually flipping onto its side.
This all happened at 50+mph and the truck didn’t stop and continued on oblivious to the scene that had unfolded. My mate chased after the truck and about a mile or so down was able to get the driver to stop.
Like the OPs incident nobody was thankfully hurt.

If I lived anywhere near OP I would volunteer to help them fix this. The problem with calling insurance is they will treat it as a claim now.

On a slightly lighter note I was heading for Silverstone a few years ago when a fat bird decided it wanted a lift!

Then a couple of years later I found another game bird on the M40 that ripped the O/S/F wheel-arch liner out of my 325ti - a grouse I think, but that one fell off the car thankfully! Mind you it did result in some repair costs.

I hit a small white brick / rectangular object in the outside lane of the M62 the other week (just going under the M1) and it hit the nearside tyre, banged under the car and shredded the tyre, instant 0 bar. If it hadn't been for the run flat it could have been much worse

Bloody hell op, I'd very very happily walk away and chalk it up as good result.

Couple of feet higher and we would be discussing this as an article on the BBC with one fatality and several injured and a motorway closed! frown

I had a near miss with a plywood sheet blowing up off an empty low lower lorry, then another of a ladder coming off the top of a van.

Luckily both times I got away with it!

They are fair game around here, but never managed to get a free dinner. I think it is a pheasant.

OP, I can't imagine hitting something like that. Exceedingly lucky that it wasn't much much worse.

This is as close as I've come to catching dinner!
