My F11 has just turned 30k miles and it’s now on its third set of rear discs and pads, each set has been badly corroded rather than worn out. It’s fair to say that the dealer has replaced each set under warranty but the car is now over 3 years old. The current set have only done 3k miles and are already dull, rusty and badly grooved.

Has anybody else experienced the same problem? The car does do mainly short trips but previous vehicles have never been a problem.

Is there a better alternative to manufacturers parts??

In 2000 miles I've been through 3 sets of discs on my f21 due to vibration under braking. Still don't know what the cause is!

Wow! Last E36 (smaller car) would get at least 30k plus on pads, twice that for discs. Current 335d at 15k miles is showing 33k miles for fronts, and 60k for rears (according to i-drive). How do you drive? I must admit I am a minimal braker, reading the road ahead and easing up in time.

The discs on my Z4MC (CSL 343mm ATE discs) get surface corrosion within a couple of days of not driving it (or about an hour after giving it a pressure washer rinse), but 10 miles of driving tends to clean them back up.

The hubs/edges never get cleaned up of course as they're not touched by the pads.

Still get about 40,000 miles out of a set of fronts though - and that included track days & Ring trips (non-OE pads though).

I'm gobsmacked by that.

Seems almost as if you need to "exercise" the brakes a bit more? On an empty road get up to speed and then brake quite "decidedly" slowing almost to 0. Repeat two or three times. Obviously only do this on decent roads and weather conditions.

Don't forget that your F10 BMW is designed to be driven hard in many countries and situations, places like mountain passes or the autobahn where doing 120mph + is normal, only to then hit the brakes hard when a dizzy motorist pulls out on you not having seen you in time. As such, it could be you're underutilising the brakes.

Just relaying my experience from Porsches, which also have this sort of issue as often in the UK daily grind you may never get the brakes up to temperature.

Also, are you washing the car and leaving it?

With all due, that’s all a bit over the top.

There isn’t a car on the road, with the exception of these with carbon or ceramic discs, that doesn’t have discs that oxidise. It’s what cast iron does when it gets wet in the open air.

Normal use should keep them in fine order.

You make a good final point though, washing and then not drying off the discs doesn’t help.

Yes, maybe, it's just a theory / suggestion of mine really. Although short local journeys at lower speeds don't always "clean" a disk. Give it a try!

What size are the discs?

Per my own thread. Friends and I have been warping multiple sets of Brembos just driving normally.

Had the same issue, i. e. discs "warped" - got a spare set of discs from very kind GSF shop in Bristol only for the same issue to reoccur a few months later. Read a few articles on the internet from people in the know and learned of brame pad deposits. Duly changed pads to a different make (think AP Lockheed if I can recall - ages ago it was). It did take a few thousand miles for the old pad deposits to wear off... Voilà, discs "unwarped"! 😀

The latest set came directly from BMW so I guess they are the same size as those that came off, without measuring I can't be sure though. Ive had all the hub cleaned up but there was no significant debris there do I really suspect the pagid pads now, maybe they are leaving a deposit on the disc, you've probably tried this ferris?

I'm using Brembo pads and discs. OEM part number but not from BMW. The post above made me wonder if there was a known issue with Brembo pads.

I'm using Pagid pads with Brembo OEM discs on another car with no issues so had thought I might switch to Pagid and see if that sorted it. Your post might just have shot that idea, too!

There's nothing obvious on the face of the problem discs and I've done the necessary to remove any build up which could be there. Didn't measure the run out on the last set but there was definite distortion.

Everyone wants big sporty brakes but then drive gently and the brakes don’t get a work out.

Give the car an Italian tune up.

And drive steadily at low speed with the handbrake on a bit (not sure if possible without a manual one?) to clean up the drums.

The car is never driven hard, it just never really seems to clean up the rear discs. They then just start to corrode and grooves form around the disc. My wife uses it mostly, I’ll try taking it for a regular harder run.

Last 3 sets I've had changed on different cars in the family have been due to rust or the pads/callipers getting stuck and wearing one pad oddly.

It'd help some users if brakes were stripped and cleaned, but garages don't do that any more. It's also odd that even 'prestige' brands don't use better discs. GM had a lot of issues (ie loads of complaints) with this in the US and switched many of their models to discs that are more corrosion resistant.

Auto? Might be pad material transferring to the disc when hot and stopped with your foot on the brake. Causes ridges on the disc that causes vibration. Can be sorted by doing a 60 mph to about 5 heavy braking, but then do a few miles of cool down before parking up.

At GSF I had bought Brembo discs and Pagid pads. Didn't like each other much - tried bedding them in a number of times, no joy as soon as they cool down. Pads swapped for the any non-Pagids the local car parts shop happened to have - think AP Lockheeds. The lot had lasted a long time, stayed on the car until it was eventually sold on - that was on an E34. Later on, on an E39 I had had Zimmerman discs, and Jurid pads fitted and slowly more and more wobble crept up. Swapped them for Textars and wobble slowly went away. When Textars were due for replacement I had then put back the Jurids which looked barely used - and have had no problem ever since...go figure. All I needed was a bit of patience - it takes a while for the (previous pad) deoposits to wear off.
