Quick technical question for those in the know.

Recently bought a ‘58 e92 330d to export to Cyprus (dad lives there).

It’s a UK model and so the clocks are MPH as you’d expect. Cyprus uses KPH, so it would seem logical to swap over to use a KPH set of dials.

I found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/BMW-3-Series-E90-E91-E92-...

Obviously, fitting it is not an issue, it’s just a few torx & off you go. However, it needs to work, and this is where my questions lie.

  • I am assuming that all warning lights will just ‘work’?
  • I am also assuming that the revs/fuel/econometer will do the same?
  • What, if anything is needed to be done to make the speedo work correctly? I am fairly sure that if it were purely mechanical, it’d be plug & play, but appreciate that might not be the case.
  • Is there any way to get the “mileage corrected” so that it’s the equivalent km instead of miles?
  • Is there an easy way to get the trip computer (has idrive too) converted intometric units?
I have laptop & cable, INPA, etc and can do a bit of coding, so am not averse to having a go!

Anyone got any experience of this/recommendations?

It won’t work properly as it will have a different mileage to the car. Why not just read the km/h from the UK speedo? I know you can set the speed to be displayed digitally at the bottom of the cluster with Carly for BMW, it may well be able to show that speed in km/h.

Cheers Helix, it’s food for thought & I already have Carly, so that’d be an option.

My thinking around trying to get it swapped over is that it’d just be more convenient to have a km/h scale only, as the car is not likely to ever leave the island, once there, (or his ownership for that matter!).

For the sake of £100, I’ll wait, and get one from ebay.de (or somewhere on the continent) when I’m next in mainland Europe, and then can try it out on the next trip to Cyprus.

The fact that the mileage will be “incorrect” is actually the least of my concerns - Cypriots tend to be less worried about rules & regulations than the average European! smile

If you want to fit a used cluster the way to do it is look up the part no on real oem. There will be numerous ones that fit. If you plug it in if it works like an E46 the mileage is stored in various ECUs. If you plug the cluster in I think it’ll show the highest mileage stored and put the tamper dot up.

I’m sure there are people who can make a used cluster display the correct mileage and not have the dot showing, but it’s not possible with BMW software.

I am in a similar situation. My car was originally purchased in the UK and I have been using it in Ireland for the last four years, Ireland uses Kilometers for speed limit and direction signs but my speedometer is still in MPH. I get around this by setting my sat-nav to show Km/hour. (it's not the built-in sat-nav, just a basic one that sticks to the windscreen). This has the advantage of being totally accurate because the signals come from a satalite rather than a wheel sensor.

BTW: I found the kilometer readings on the inner ring of the speedometer to be useless for day-to-day use, they seem to be too small.
