2010 BMW 120d (125k miles) - Under normal driving conditions there has recently been a strong smell of clutch but no other real signs of clutch wear, for example no slipping even when trying to induce this. Also, my left foot is on the rest plate and not on the clutch whilst driving.

There is occasionally some clutch judder and I believe this has something to do with a known issue with the dual mass fly wheel.

When I park up the smell of clutch is fairly obvious.

Before I go and drop £800-1K on a replacement clutch and DMF can anyone shed any light on what might be going on here?

Cheers.

Clutch & brake friction material are similar in many ways, are you sure it is coming from the clutch?

Also, has the brake/clutch fluid reservoir gone down at all, as it could also be clutch fluid leaking onto the friction surface, although they do smell different.

Are you sure you haven't got a brake caliper/pad intermittently sticking? Same smell and could induce the jerkyness as well?

The 120d I had was prone to sticky callipers, particularly if it wasn't used every day. Go round and touch the wheels after a drive to see if one feels hotter than the rest. A clutch won't smell if it isn't slipping.

Exactly my thoughts and the quick diagnosis by gordmac is spot on.

I think you may have nailed it there. I'll go on a long drive tomorrow and try and feel for a particularly hot wheel.

Stop patting each other on the back, I think you will find I nailed it first! wink
