Hi guys,

I have heard many stories about the N47 engine and timing chain issues, which has always pushed me away from them even though they return amazing MPG.

For that reason I have always had a 6 pot 3L in my BMWs, I had a 525D LCI auto previously which was remapped and was really fast and return decent MPG (38/39) combined, anyways I wanted more power so sold it and bought a 535D LCI in the same shape and remapped it, now 362BHP and 750NM torque, WOW what a machine! It has left a number of performance cars and always puts a smile on my face!

However due to hit and run in which I was involved has kind of put me in a situation where I might not be able to insure a 3L again :/ so looking at alternatives (2L for economy and cheaper insurance, being 26), having had 2 BMWs I now am addicted to them and love how the power is delivered (RWD), the only thing that's putting me off them is the known issue with timing chains I could go for a Mercedes but been told that they are also known for their timing chain issues, Not a great fan of Audis as they are kind of boring to drive (FWD) models.

Have read that the newer facelift models of the 20d's have a newer engine (B47) would these also be affected by the same timing chain issue? They are mounted in the same position as the N47 (rear of the engine) is it too early to predict? Looking to keep my next car for the next 4/5 years so don't want to buy a un-reliable model.

Thanks.

The B47 has the same timing chain as the N47. However I have not heard of any problems with the B47. I suspect the tensioner is better. Long term-who knows!

I have a 320d with the b47 and when in for something else it had the “quality enhancement” egr valve fitted (basically there were emissions irregularities with the original one)

A while after it then became really jerky to drive especially when going from light throttle to mid throttle. BMW diagnosed the fault as a failed egr (Yes the new one) and replaced it with another software revision for it. It still can be slightly jerky/have a dead spot from light throttle but it is better than before.

Definately something to look out for.
