CBS on 320D GT
Discussion
I have just bought my first BMW from a car supermarket - Not something I recommend or would ever do again, but that's a different story.....
Its a 65 plate 3 series 320D Auto. I love the way it drives and I am generally happy with it except that I have niggling doubts about service history.
I bought it at 18,500miles. The service history on paper shows 1st service at main dealer at 9,500miles and 2nd service at car supermarket at 18,500 miles. It has a set of 4 new budget tyres on it.
I'm new to CBS servicing but thought that 15k to 18k were the typical service intervals for the car with average driving?
I managed to contact the dealer that did the initial service and they stated that it was due as per CBS. There is no record of second service on the IDrive as it was the supermarket that did it (front brakes come up on that one as well as the oil, filter).
Do you think I have spent a lot of money on a car that has been thrashed? I suspect it is an ex company car. Should I be concerned?
Many thanks.

More paranoia I'm afraid. My recently aquired car's trip computer doesn't tie up with odometer. Im guessing that the mileage tops out at 5999 as it has stopped moving. Mph is 17.6 average - Really? That multiplied by 1119 hours is more than what is on the odo (less than 19k). 33mpg? Also, the first service done at 9500? Have i bought a taxi?

I've done 23,194 miles.
Number of hours 741:07 and average speed 32.4 multiplied out it's 24,010 so a margin for error? Similar to yours, 18000 and not 19000??
My mileage tab also tops out at 5,999.
On the other point, the first service (oil and filters) is either 2 years or the mileage , which varies depending on driving style.
Mine required a service after 16,300 but I do short distances and drive it hard. It originally said 19,000 so you can see how driving style impacts.
Maybe, as said, the owner wanted it done early or had the 2 years elapsed? Did a different owner, then do more miles in a shorter time. I don't think you said how many owners?
"One owner" First service done March 17, 16 months from new at 9,400m. Second service at car supermarket at 18.5k.
Dealer was keen to keep reg document away from me and post off himself. I'm pretty sure it had a company name on it.
In addition:
I was told that 30% of cars came without second key - only after committing to buy.
I was offered 25% less for my part-ex after inspection even though there was nothing wrong with it.
There were items on the website that weren't on the car such as auto paddles and heated seats.
They tried to get commitment to buy from me before allowing test drive and the salesman practically threw the keys at me.
I was made to watch poxy videos for warranties and paint guard.
The salesmen were just awful people.
I know what you are thinking - why didn't I walk? Well I did at one point and then they decided to give me the test drive and I fell for the car and just wanted to buy it and get out of there.
My likely scenario for this car is that it was on a 10k a year lease and it was "adjusted" by the keeper just before the services - or am I being cynical?

Says 16k to oil change so it was reset. Looks like the trip hasn't been reset since new. 1120 hours at 17mph just doesn't seem right unless it was a school run. Also, is it likely to go through a full set of tyres and front pads in 18k? I can't help getting uptight. I feel like I've been violated by the car shark! If it's likely to be reliable for 5 years and 75k then I'll try and enjoy it anyway!!
I got about 36k miles on mine just with servicing and no brake pads. Tyres I’m unsure about as I swapped with winters, and have had all 4 replaced through people crashing into it.
Check the condition of the seats if you’re worried about use, especially the bolsters. If a taxi, are the rears particularly worn too?

Is it AWD (X Drive) ? And are all 4 tyres the same size (square set up)?
Cos my X1 got thru tyres and front pads at the same miles.
I think you’ll maybe learn more when you check V5 and see what this company who owned it does ?
I’m less and less convinced the trip computer can be relied upon if , like with mine, it wasn’t reset.
Call into a BMW dealer and get them to read the key , see if that can tell you anymore.

Calm down dears! Who says it’s clocked? Op if you like the car, enjoy it.
“My likely scenario for this car is that it was on a 10k a year lease and it was "adjusted" by the keeper just before the services - or am I being cynical?”What does this mean other than the OP suspects it’s been clocked?
But as I said, I don’t think it’s hard to check.
A few bits from me if it helps?
1. Put the car supermarket behind you, it's volume sales stuff and they don't care. Move on, at least you've got a great car
2. Disregard the car supermarket service completely - I'd get BMW to do the Oil Service (about £220 with microfilters) and go from there. If it's not properly recorded in the BMW system (via the Key) then you'll have difficulties with any follow up warranty work. I'd also want the assurance they haven't simply topped it up... If you get lucky they'll give you a brief history of the car, spec and build sheets, and any historical error codes or warranty work - plus any system updates.
3. Of course the car is an ex company car, the vast majority of 320d's will be, especially at the supermarket where they'll pick up swathes of ex-lease cars - shouldn't be an issue at all.
4. The CBS thing works really well, just leave it to the car to adapt to your style and figure out when stuff it due. Massive mileages between oil changes are fairly common, my 330d gets swapped around 18k usually. I just had my first set of front disks and pads at 98k (yep, 98k) so it's very good at sorting itself out to save you money.
5. There's an outside chance the car has a Service Pack with it, you can check this on the BMW website
6. Tyre wear is completely dependant on driving style and setup - I wouldn't read into any quicker wear as a bad thing as such, maybe it's had a city life?
7. Sign up for the extended warranty - there are several options, some with excess and some without - check out any BMW forum to see how well it's regarded. The cars are generally very reliable, but when they do go wrong it can be costly. A 'check engine' light at about 95k would have cost me around £2400 without the warranty. In the end it cost me £100 excess
Overall just enjoy the car, they are great cars
