Hi, I am looking to buy a 2nd hand 320d touring 8 speed step auto in the coming months. I have around 20k to spend so will hopefully get an LCI facelift model with the lower emissions.
I do 30k miles a year so am likely to put another 150k on top of what the car has already mileagewise.
Is it a good car for the job? A lot of people assume German diesel ‘no problem ‘ but in reality is it?

It might last it might not. The 6 cylinder has more chance of lasting though sadly that’s the N57 which is starting to get problems too.

Edit, I wouldn’t expect an F30/1 320d to last 200k. (I’m sure lots have-but based on my experience of BMWs recent 4 cylinders I wouldn’t recommend one for 200k).

Timing chains are the main problem area on the N57, much rarer than on the N47, but they are still giving problems.

There is a thread on here about high mileage N47s if you want lots of peoples experiences.

The B47 and B57 share the timing chain but I’ve not heard of problems on these yet.

If you buy one I hope it does make it! thumbup

But I bailed out of my 123d with the N47 engine at 81K (before the "Quality Enhancement" programme, although I think that has stopped now).

So having a "later in life" crisis I bought a Z4 Coupe to replace it (as you would, with a bit of early pension lump sum). laugh

I liked it so much I've just bought an E91 325i with the same N2 engine on 132K miles - I'm hoping that may get to 200K miles. Time will tell!

I have an F31 320d msport, now at 38k miles and it is far and away the best all round car I have ever owned. Great to drive, comfortable, economical and feels very well built. But, and it is a big round but, absolutely no way will I be keeping it past 100k miles based on my experience with my last car, and E91 320d. That car was bombproof reliable up to about 110k miles, then it was a nightmare - you name it: drop links, electrical issues, broken springs, dodgy MAF sensor, knackered thermostat,. oil leaks, wheel bearings, and the final straw a blown turbo leaving me stranded 300 miles from home. Turbo was replaced but even after going back to the garage several time the engine never felt quite right. Love the F31, but for 6 figure mileage? Not for me.

You will be doing 30K presumably on the motorway?

If you were to do intermediary oil changes, rather than the absurd 20K BMW proposes, I think you would be fine. Get an AUC and keep it on monthly warranty before you go beyond 60K, and you are covered.

Reliability aside, it *may* make more financial sense to offload the car at 98'000 whilst it still has a value.

Of course it will do 200k if you look after it however the first owner may not have so that's the gamble.

Things will be subject to wear as time and mileage does that so expect to maintain the car.

Which oddly many on PH don't seem to want to do.

You don't need interim oil changes at 30k per year you'll be servicing it every 6 or 7 months which is fine you don't need to change the oil every 3 months that's not needed.

This. My F11 is on 145K miles at 5 years old and I expect it to do 200K. 30K a year is good for such cars, regular servicing (including gearbox) and it should do fine as it will likely only be asbout 7 years old. Short journeys where engines don't warm up and lots of start stop work in cities are worse for engines.
