According to reports in the Daily Mail Jaguar Land Rover to cut production and staff in Solihull due to large fall in sales of diesel cars

Apparently 1000 jobs to go as Jaguar sales fall 27% and Land Rover 20% in the first quarter of 2018

Being blamed on changes to VED rates and the fact that 90% of JLR production is diesel

It’s not letting me paste the link for some reason

BBC report here.

Seems to be contractors rather than permanent staff.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover will cut around 1,000 jobs and production at two of its English factories due to a fall in sales caused by uncertainty around Brexit and confusion over diesel policy, a source told Reuters.

Strange the Daily Mail seemed to have missed the bit about Brexit

Cars sales are down in the EU where last time I looked they were not leaving. The main man at PSA was bemoaning that the EU had effectively said Diesels are evil and yet had no plans on what is now acceptable or strategy going forward.
Many cities in the EU are now wanting to ban diesel cars so what should people actually buy? It is this uncertainty that is not helping as well as world events.

He added that until they invest in charging points EU wide people do not want electric in volume.

Meanwhile in the UK, the government has got in a mess. They have demonised diesel so consumers are not wanting to buy a car they will be charged extra to own, park or drive anywhere near a city, but are still saying Co2 is very bad!!! But all the time this is happening company cars are still a better financial bet for drivers of diesel due to lower taxation as the average hybrid or EV is so much higher value on the P111D.

Trade in value on Diesels I was told have dropped as consumers react with uncertainty and do not want to take huge hits so are running them longer.

Jaguar invested heavily and the Queen was wheeled out to open the engine plant to build diesels in 2004, but that was before all the tree huggers targeted diesel after the VW debacle.

Jaguar will bounce back as they are fast getting hybrids to market but to suddenly switch everything to petrol is not easy for anyone

yes

It’s uncertainty over the next ‘green’ policy that the government will dream up.

Many switched to diesel as petrol was punished due to CO2 emissions

Now they’re saying diesel is evil and planning to punish diesel owners.

And they wonder why people are thinking “I’ll stick with what I have”.

The trade-in prices dropping is just dealers screwing people. FleetNews reported today that auction prices for diesels are stable and expected to remain so.

If anything, falling new diesel sales, plus your valid comment about people hanging on them for longer, would suggest stronger prices as there's less of them in the market.

Indeed, this is one of VW's diesel graveyard in america. In total, 350,000 diesel vw have been recalled....er.. bought back...er ... invested in future tech by VW

I’ve decided to keep mine .. it’s now three years old and EU6 and low Co2

It’s an X3 .. and I need that type of car and the diesel does 40 mpg which living up in the Pennines is important

I had a look at changing it for the new X3 but the px figures weren’t great so I’ll stick rather than twist for now

I’d agree naff all to do with Brexit .. other than politicians have ducked this up .. this is the EU

Maybe if we get Brexit .. we can have as many polluting diesel cars as we like

After all hasn’t trump removed all the emissions/mpg targets from US cars ?

Yeah, possibly the wrong thread (few pints up, apologies!), but the recent changes to road tax really doesn't help with the confusion. What do we want, less CO2, or less NOX? Apparently we now want fewer expensive cars, but that doesn't help the consumer in engine choice. It's almost like the government doesn't know why they want what they want.

That's literally as far as the eye can see!
I don't get why consumers are treated so much better in America, the RX8 had a no quibble 80k warranty for the engine in America whereas in Europe they offered nothing.

Diesels have no place in heavily congested urban areas imo, people bought them as they saw the road tax was cheap and they could get a few more mpg compared to petrol but the air quality needs to improve so something has to be done about them.
