4 new tyres fitted last year - Pirelli P Zero - at a cost of €1500 including balancing & tracking via a BMW dealer. Discovered shocking wear on the outside of both front tyres - after 11,000 miles. (Original factory fitted set lasted 23,000 miles & would have lasted another 5000 miles were it not for pothole damage to one tyre - dealer encouraged me to replace all four.).
I have been driving 3 series for a long time (325i, 328i m sport, 330d m sport). This is the first one with x drive. Could be the last BMW X drive I buy.

Has anyone else had similar tyre problems with the X drive version?? Any advice on what tyres to fit this time?? Thanks

If you meant your factory fitted tyres weren’t Pirelli , why not fit a set of them as they’re proven?

I’m not going to get much more from my Pirelli p zeros on my XDrive X1 so will revert to the Bridgestone Turanzas. next time.

If they made Michelin’s for my tire size that’s the brand I’d get. I have the 4S on my M3 but think for your 3 Series it’s the Pilot Sport 4. Had them on a 335i , excellent.

If you had Pirelli’s from the start you may want to look at anything about your car that’s causing the increase in wear. Wheel alignment , dodgy shocks. I’m no expert but have dealt with those issues before.

Presumably the alignment was checked after the pothole incident? Is it right? That looks to be the place to start.

Nope.

Mainly motorway driving means my winters + Bridgestone RFI have lasted at least 60k with 4mm left on the winters and 3mm on the summer rears.

Front edges are worn but that’s over enthusiastic cornering.

Sounds like a geo problem - find a tyre place with proper 4 wheel alignment device such as hunters Hawkeye and who know how to use it. E.g.

The other factor is tyre pressures, you've got to be a bit Anal McLooney about them as the set-up is very sensitive to them.

Thanks everybody. V helpful. The BMW dealer recommended the Pirelli P Zeros but when I queried them on the subsequent wear, they informed me that they “could not set everything up as well as the factory-fitted set of tyres had been”.…… They also would not tell me what the original tyres were. Terrific!
A different BMW dealer has recommended Bridgestones or Goodyear but not which models.

My research has also flagged up something called the “Star” symbol which apparently needs to be on tyres approved by BMW... I think I should revert to the Michelins I had on previous BMWs and the Pilot Sport 4 one of you mentioned sounds right. Or possibly the best Bridgestone model.

Incidentally someone wrote in thinking of downsizing from a 330d m sport to a 320d m sport. I did (trying to be mature). My advice: stick with the 330 engine - it purrs.

335d Xdrive. 16k Miles, wear on all four tyres look OK, barely 2-3mm worn down, so 3-4mm left. Pirelli Pzero runflats.

Thanks.

Reading all replies, I suspect the alignment / tracking / something - has to be out. However, there have no outward signs of this - no handling problems at any speed, no judder, no pulling to one side etc. And I do regularly check the tire pressures.

I would go to the specialist mentioned above - but I am currently based in the south west of Ireland... From what the service manager said to me initially, I do not think my local BMW franchise had much - if any - experience of the X drive in a 3 series touring.
