can anyone give me some tips so i don't end up buying a lemon?

Im going to see a 17 plate 320 which has done 28k miles in a year.

presumably it has been used on the motorway but the garage don't seem to know much about it.
It also strikes me as odd that someone doing that kind of mileage would use a petrol instead of a 320d..

other than a shiny steering wheel is there anything specific I could look out for which may point to it being abused?

cheers

Does the reg number start with a Y ?

These cars are registered by BMW and used for management/lease/hire rather than private owners.

Have a look at who the owner is in the log book. If it's BMW then ask what it has been used for.

Yup. Plus every other single car which is registered in Yorkshire.

I second checking log-book. do you already know it's only 1 owner?

As before, 28k is a good indicator of motorway mileage but not absolute so look at idrive and besides the oil service which it must have had see where it's at on "vehicle check," and " fr/rear brake pads." Already done / closer to being due could indicate a harder than motorway life.

I did 28k business miles in a petrol Mondeo, but 21k last year with very little motorway in a X1, the wear and tear differences were noticeable. wink

17 plate was around the time diesel hate came in, but not everyone sees 28k as needing a diesel, so that's not necessarily proof either way.

If it's car I'm thinking of seems it was supplied by Douglas Park BMW and is now with a big retailer, so maybe a part-ex or they've just picked up some ex-company / hire car etc. from auction or wherever.

Looked grubby in photos.

yeah its Arnold Clark Aberdeen who have it..
it looked like someone had probably smoked inside it from the pictures.

There was a few scuffs on the front of it and some kerbing of the alloys which they are doing just now.

a few folk have told me to check the idrive but not really sure what they mean?
I know it tells you when things need done on it like oil , pads etc but can I glean anything else from it?

they had to replace a rear tyre and said that the rear pads had to be done to get it on the road again..
its also getting serviced they told me..

I found that a little bit odd as well unless there was a nail or something through the sidewall..
I did ask them and they said they thought it was a leased car.

kinda sounding like it should be avoided..

just paid for a vehicle check;

Source Date Mileage
BVRLA 18/04/2018 28,604
BVRLA 17/12/2017 21,956
RMI MIL'GE 15/12/2017 21,956
BVRLA 17/08/2017 13,317
RMI MIL'GE 16/08/2017 13,317

so its been a rental car that has probably had its face kicked in and driven with zero sympathy...

Sounds like an avoid, it was nearly 18k, that's a pretty healthy budget for buying a 3 series.

This is the same sort of car, it's cheaper-low miles and from BMW

thanks for the info guys..

think I will just call it off now as i was going to have them transport it down to nearer my home town so I could look at it..

My last car was ex motability and the clutch melted after 6 months.

they tried to blame me and I had to fight to get it fixed FOC..

it needs to be reliable for 4 years and I know how most people drive rental cars..

Thats a myth, most people just drive them, your license is the main limiting factor and a modern BMW should be able to take at least some stick.

That’s not high mileage. I have the an 18 year old steering wheel that has covered 260k miles on my BMW. It’s not shiny or worn out.

Suppose it's unlikely a 320 would be driven sideways around a roundabout... Really don't know.. Will probably go and see it and take it from there

Maybe not but there a large number of cars registered by BMW floating around (so are on Y* plates) - many are ex employee cars but many can also be fleet/rental purchased/leases direct from BMW. My 3 series is YL16 but was owned by erac from new. I assume they just bought/leased it from BMW

I wouldn't be too bothered.

Back in 1995 I bought a 1992 Cavalier SRi from my employer that had been on the company fleet and had done 95K miles!

My employer was in Kent, the user lived in Bristol and had a girl-friend in Swindon.

It was on 97K miles when I took it for it's 1st MOT, but it was a much better car than the 1991 Sierra Sapphire GLSi it replaced that had done half as many miles!

And 28K on a diesel is nothing to worry about.

Anyway I hope it works out. thumbup

Just need to make sure the oil was changed before 28k. If not its a deal breaker.

It's a petrol BTW!
