Any recommendations on where to source one and how to best identify the type?

I believe the car is likely to have a water cooled one, is there a way to tell without actually taking the thing apart?

Pop your chassis no into realoem website. You’ll be able to tell from there.

Not sure of any cheap sources. Maybe ECP with their daily discount code, CP4LESS will be a pain as you’ll have return postage to pay on the exchange one.

They don't seem to be that great, if the images are accurate the only water cooled one is the extortionate Bosch.

You can't just have bearings, brushes and the diode pack (if broken) replaced?

Some will, not all.
You're probably better off removing it and sending it off to a specialist for assessment/reconditioning. Should be much cheaper than replacing it.
