Bought a 65 plate X5 just over 3 weeks ago. 1 owner car with 23k on it. It was bought from a dealer ~150 miles away.

Picked the car up and had a few issues from the start. Load cover missing and the BMW approved used plate stuck over the cars number plate! Was told a new load cover would be ordered and sent to me (still waiting for it) and that someone would go and remove the plate. They didn't actually do it though and thankfully I noticed before we drove off.

My wife drove it home and the first time I drove it was the next day. I immediately noticed a few issues:
- rubbing noise from front near side that increased in frequency and volume with speed.
- steering is out of alignment, wheel is off centre
- usb socket is intermittent in whether it works or not.

Since that initial set of issues one of the rear seat belt buckles has stopped working too.

To book in with my local dealer and get a courtesy car was going to be near the end of the month and due to the rubbing noise I wanted it looked at asap so it went in yesterday.
The car needs:
- new brake backing plates both sides
- four wheel alignment and then further investigation into the steering.
- new usb component
- new seat belt buckle

Firstly, the seat belt buckle and the usb socket, things go wrong, I wouldn't have expected these to be picked up in an AUC preparation either so we will ignore those.

The other two points I have objections to however. From speaking to the service manager at my local dealer, having seen the car himself he agrees that these should have been picked up in the road test element of the AUC prep. So either the supplying dealer has cut corners with the prep or have chosen to skimp on the work it needs as I had bought the car remotely.

I've been in touch with the head of business at the supplying dealer throughout who is taking it as seriously as I would hope. The parts have all been ordered and the ETA for return to me is end of the week. Thankfully my local dealer have helped me out and found a 118d that we can use in the mean time.

I'm keen to hear what people think is fair in this situation? I had started to push for the supplying dealer to collect the car, address the issues and provide something comparative while I wait. But this has been negated by my local finding a loan car for me, albeit a 118d.

Is it fair to push for some compensation? It wasn't a cheap car and I expected better. When you factor in the poor prep, poor hand over, failure to come good on promises made and inconvenience faced with a car we've only had 3 weeks, I'm thinking they need to cover a service or two as a minimum, or do I stfu and take it as it is?

Oh yes, you definitely deserve compensation for that, free servicing at least for life and to sleep with the supplying dealership principles wife or husband, if that floats your boat ....

What exactly do you want compensating for ??

Ridiculous question you've asked based on how well you are being looked after.....

Honestly? No it's not. You haven't suffered any losses and hence require no compensation.

Whilst your issues are annoying they aren't critical are they?

It's not like they've sold you a clocked, Cat C with outstanding finance is it?

They are dealing with it (at no cost to you) , and have provided alternative transport. You cant ask for more IMHO.

You have now discovered the amount of preparation that an AUC car gets.
None.
It's up to the consumer to find out all the problems with an AUC car, which then gets sorted with the BMW warranty, rather than at the Dealers cost. Am I being cynical? Experience tells me I'm not.

You may get some "goodwill" from the supplying dealer, but I wouldn't hold my breath. They have sold the car out of area, so won't be seeing it for service. They have done a poor job and have no incentive to do anything. With your experience, you'll not be buying another car from them will you??

As for your local dealer, I'm sure they are doing sufficient, in the hope that you will take the car to them for service - that's the business model i'd use!

Thanks for the opinions.

Local dealer has saved this by being so helpful.

My issue with the supplying dealer is that they have not sold the car in the state it was supposed to be. The inconvenience isn’t huge, but it has been a pita to sort out.

You make complete sense. I know full well this is exactly what has happened. My local dealer is great and have always used them. Let’s see what happens.

You couldn't make it up.... received a load cover in the post today! But.... no idea what BMW it's for as it certainly isn't for my car!

If you're that interested, go to RealOEM.com and put in the part number, which will be on the load cover somewhere. This will tell you what car it's supposed to be fitted to. Then you'll know how to describe it on eBay!

Unfortunately the AUC process is more focused at HPI checks and due or imminently servicing requirements than actually checking the car over to ensure everything works as it should.

Bottom line for you is to get things sorted correctly. As the car is still under the 3 year new car warranty I should think BMW UK would have picked up the costs (except for the alignment?) any which way so it really was shoddy of the supplying dealer to let it go out in that state.

The guy has had the nerve to reply telling me it should fit as it came from an identical car... err, no it didn't! It's 3" too short and not the right shape to fit!

I've looked for a part number on it but cannot see one, any suggestions on where to find it?

I had the same situation when buying a BMW AUC (A Scottish dealer). My local dealer was excellent in sorting things out.

My car had:
Wiper blade rubbers knackered (and I mean knackered - there was a six inch flap of rubber hanging off one of them) MoT failure item
Sun-Roof screen (at the front of the opening) had come out - replaced with new screen
Cig lighter sockets not working
Transmission shunt under 40mph

All in all, not a list of headline grabbing faults, but the car had a 12 month MoT from a few days before pick up so I question if that had been done properly. My local dealer had the whole lot sorted - that included a set of new PZeros as the transmission shunt was identified as non-OEM tyres fitted (3 different makes) on an X-Drive car.

Going to go and check my tyres now...

I bought an AUC from a dealer 300 miles away some years ago. They installed 4 new tyres and front brake discs and pads as part of the AUC process, or so they said. I noted a vibration under braking on the drive home so had a closer look. The pads were new but the discs were knackered and worn past the wear limit. I booked it into my local dealer who treated my claim/request with some scepticism until they looked themselves and verified my findings. By this point the recently replaced pads had worn to the old discs so were replaced again - all at the selling dealer's expense. Sadly some do try it on and caveat emptor pretty much still applies.

Sorry, no idea. They usually emboss a part number somewhere, and if it's new, (which yours isn't!), there will be a paper label.

I thought I had an old one in the shed, so I could give you a clue, but I must have sold it!!
