I recently bought a 2006 118 se Petrol bmw with 37,000 miles on the clock. I had to top up the oil 3 times in the first 3 weeks after having done less then 400 miles each week. which I’m concerned about. The car has no has no signs of oil leaks and isn’t blowing any smoke, white or black. I have noticed if I start the car and stand at the rear there appears too be excessive smell of what I can only assume are fumes. Maybe it’s because it’s in a confined space and I’m being overly worried.
Had the car serviced last week and and the correct oil ( Castrol start stop, 05/30 C3) and filter were changed . And was happy as the last 7 days the level appeared too stay fixed, however last night I noted the level on the dash board has crept down ever so slightly. I hasten to add it’s better. There’s no sign of any leaking both below or above the engine so would a slightly thicker grade oil help. 05/40?
Can any body give advise as too what could be happening.
Many thanks Gary

Typo in title describes car behaviour ...
By how much are you topping up each time? Do you rag it everywhere?
Some engines consume oil at quite a rate - my wife's old e87 would use a litre/1k miles in its later years.
My strategy was to accept that it was happening, and buy cheaper oil.

A 2006 118i will have an N46 engine, known for using oil when old. Let it idle when hot for a minute, then blip the throttle. Chances are you'll get a puff of blue grey smoke. That's worn rings or stem seals, and these suffer in old age.
Just keep putting oil in it. No point in spending loads to fix it at this stage of its life.

Many thanks for the replies. And apologies for the spulling mistake......
In the first 4 weeks the oil light came on the dash board 3 times and told me too put in just 1 litre which I did. I only do aprox 400 miles per week and I’m an over cautious driver. Mainly motorway and never thrap it. I’m happy doing 60/65 miles per hour in 6th gear. After having an oil change and Castrol 5w30 start stop put in I’ve noticed a huge difference. This week I did aprox 500 miles and on checking the oil it has moved according too the computer but only very marginally. Im aware these use a lot of oil and whilst I see no leaking or smell of burning oil ( from the mint) engine compartment I’ll do the idle speed check. Checking for smoke. I know you can also leave the engine running at idle and if you remove the oil cap if you note a quick and sudden suction noise then that could indicate an issue.
Might just of been the wrong oil prior too the correct Castrol being put in...
Let’s see eh....!
Thanks

I have a 2008 120i on 191k and it doesn't use that much oil I don't think. I do around 500 miles a week but mainly on the motorway at cruising speed, maybe it's to do with your driving style?
2008 is the N43. A moderately more oil tight engine. Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
