Hi everybody!

The wife’s 66 reg X1 25d has done 9000 miles and a couple of days ago went into limp mode. BMW Assist came out within an hour, diagnosed the fault which was the EGR valve and replaced it. Great job, sorted straight away!A few weeks before the limp mode incident the car became sluggish and reluctant to pull away.

Problem is now, is this going to happen again? She generally does short journeys from cold, 1 mile to 8 miles, rarely over 10 miles. The car was an ex demo so I don’t know if it was half fked when she got it. Is this a characteristic of the engine or will it being an ex demo have caused it.

Nothing to do with being an ex demo. I’m sure it will be fine now.

If she’s doing that sort of mileage, the dpf will be ripe for an early funar also.

Low miles and modern dervs don’t mix.

With those kinds of miles it will go again I'd suggest, and the inlet manifold will get coked up beyond belief. It's the cold starts and lack of mileage that's the issue. In the winter, even at 10 miles I'd guess the engine won't reach peak operating temp.

If it's under warranty I wouldn't worry at all, beyond that get the extended warranty if you're keeping the car for a while.

My 330d does 50 miles of motorway and A Roads daily and has had the EGR replaced at 45k and 90k - at 90k it would have been a fairly serious bill as the inlet manifold was replaced - thankfully the extended warranty (great experience) sorted the issue.

It’s under warranty and she’ll likely want it swapping soon after the warranty expires so I’m not too worried. The signs seem to be the car gets sluggish when pulling away before it goes in to limp mode.

Cheers chaps!

Exactly the same happened with my wife's (bought new) 2016 X1 at around the same miles. BMW technician on the drive with EGR valve removed said to me "have you been using supermarket fuel?" Yes, I replied.
"There's your problem. Only use Shell, Texaco, BP and you'll be fine."
This chap was in his late 50's, and had been a technician working on Porsche, Rolls, Aston, Lamborghini, in the past.
He explained why supermarket fuel is to be avoided due to the addition of sulphur to boost the octane rather than double refining it.
I forget the exact terminology. Needless to say we've only used premium fuel since.
And before you say "not that old twaddle again" I would usually be sceptical too but this time the way he knew so definitely that it had been on Tesco's finest convinced me to change.

Oh... and by the way, although he cleaned the EGR on the drive and the car worked fine after, he said it would have to go into the dealership to have a new one fitted under warranty. Are you sure he replaced yours with a new one and didn't just clean it?

I don’t agree with your BMW man. Diesels have a cetane rating rather than octane. I ran a BMW diesel for 250k miles on the original egr valve. All sorts of fuel were used in the course of the cars 18 year lifespan.

Was it short or long journeys though, will that make a difference? For the mileage she does she might as well use non-supermarket fuel.

Saying that though, I had a A3 about 10 years ago, filled up once with esso ‘premium’ diesel and following that my EGR valve failed. Coincidence?
