I'm thinking of buying a 2014-2017 year X3 30d or 35d. Haven't picked a particular car yet but most of them seem to have the standard stereo and a smattering with the Harmon Kardon stereo.
Can anybody help with the following:
- Is having Professional Multimedia entirely separate to the grade of sound system installed? Is there a difference in the sound system with Business vs Professional Multimedia?
- Is the standard sound system crap?
- Or do 30d/35d come standard with not the lowest sound system? Do they have an amplifier around about the 180W range in the boot somewhere or is the X3 standard system powered from the headunit?

the standard system is dire. I went with a system 3+ from these guys. Perfect!

You can have the full size screen with the poverty stereo and it really is grim IE hard to hear over the cars road noise on the Motorway. I would go as far as saying HK is essential.
I disagree that HK is essential - I've got the speaker upgrade in mine and it's way better than standard and to my ears very little difference to the HK setup in a good friends 3 series.I would say a speaker upgrade is well worth seeking out rather than essential as the company Ian has pointed out can upgrade. The essential option for an X3 30/35d is VDC.

Until recently I had an X3 30d xLine with no options ticked at all. I thought the standard stereo was pretty poor, my current Seat Leon has a much better sound. My wife has HK and pro-nav in her 3 series and both are excellent. If I was looking at second hand X3s, I wouldn't even consider one without pro-nav to be honest - the speakers are easily sorted as above.
I don't personally agree that VDC is essential.. as long as you keep to smaller wheels and non run-flat tyres the ride quality is very good. It's a nice option to have when buying used though.
