Hi

I recently lost or mislaid my 2008 E92 330D remote fob. I got a new replacement remote fob today from my local stealer for £170.
The parts guy said it would just work when I put it into the fob slot.

Unfortunately it doesn't just work. When inserted, on the display it comes up with a key with a line through it.
I've tried holding it in for 20-30 seconds but not getting any joy.

I phoned the dealer and they said to take it in which I'm not overly keen on doing as I don't want to be spending any more ££ if I can help it.

Any ideas ?

Cheers

The dealer should make it work for what you have spent and no more.

Not at all unreasonable to make that clear to them when you take it in and to be fair probably their intention anyway (unless for some reason they have said otherwise).

Couple of possibilities- one is that it’s had a replacement immobiliser/ engine ecu and key set from a breakers fitted - therefore the ordered key will be for the old unit

Two- the car is a ringer and the chassis number on the car is not the original

Three - the dealer ordered the key to the wrong chassis number.

If u check your receipt it should show the last seven digits of the chassis number that they ordered the key for - see if it matches the one in your windscreen - if not then it looks like the dealers at fault. If it is then u may have a bigger issue.

Did you order the whole key with the hidden key blade or just the remote section of the key? If you have the whole new key then does the blade work in the lock?

Just so you know - I have experienced all 3 of the above happen at my time at a bmw dealer and the second option resulted in the customer having his car taken away by the police two weeks after buying it privately

When I got a replacement key for my 6 series I had to pair it to the car; held it against a marked area on the steering column and held down the power button, making sure the other key was no where near so not to mess up the signal. Not sure if the 3 series is similar? I'd go back to John Clarks otherwise; they mistakenly gave me the wrong locking nut a few weeks ago and were happy to replace it for the correct one the next day, no charge. Doubt they would charge you anything, assuming it's a pairing issue or maybe a defective part.

I'd love to know how/why that happens - it's just taken me an hour to find the log-in details for a service I used 3 mths ago!

I guess the OP may let us know how he resolved his issue in 2030. smile

Thanks for all the replies.

I went back to the dealer today and it turns out the 2nd key had been blocked sometime in the past maybe due to the original owner losing a key.

Give John Clark Aberdeen their due, they took it to the workshop and reprogrammed the new key to work and it does.
They didn't charge anything to do this so happy enough.

Cheers
