was surprised to find the battery entirely flat - no lights, locks etc!

Only 1 week without driving and its not a car I drive more than a couple of days a week anyway and very short journeys.

I am hoping it is just the battery being Kaput - any risk it can be anything else or can I just stick a charger on it and get it sorted?

The issue is in your 2nd statement short journeys and not regular use. It does take a while for the charge lost via starting ( more so from cold) to be made back, I think most people say around 10-12 miles!

Personally I think you need a 2 stage process one replace the battery and get a battery maintenance charger on it if possible.

If the problem re-occurs with a new battery, Z4s can been known for having parasitic power drains, quite a few members on the Z4 forum report having them on older models. Can be hard to id exactly what it is that drains the power but anything aftermarket would be the first check. Good luck; it might just be a dodgy battery.

I think your limited use may not help - my current Z4C needed a new battery at 10 years old.

Which didn't seem unreasonable to be fair!
