Hi

Any idea what size winter wheels an X3 35d m sport (2016) will take? Will an 18in fit over the brakes?

I have tried searching but can't seem to find an answer.

Thanks

18” will definitely fit, possibly even 17”

Resurrecting this! We have the 20inch M sport plus wheel upgrade on our X3 (35d), and notwithstanding the awful ride, are getting sick of having to replace tyres every 9-12 months. We live in a rural area and crashing over potholes everyday just kills the tyres.

Looking at a set of 17inch wheels with winter tyres on eBay, but want to make sure they will fit before we hit the go button? Have read online that the 35d may have larger brake discs and thus cause an issue?

Many thanks

If you can get hold of a loan of one wheel from a mate, offer it up to check the offset. My buddy has an E90 and was specced new with 18". He bought a set of 17" wheels and tyres and they wouldn't go over the brakes without a 25mm spacer. He crashed that one, and got a year O'Dea car with a similar spec but had been bought new on 17" and upgraded later on, and the 17" OEM winter steeled that didn't fit the first car went on with no hassle. Never thought that 2 320ds a year apart would have different brakes all round

Irritatingly, if I' m looking at replacement brake discs on eurocarparts for example, x35d front discs are no larger than a 20d m sport....

335d m sport has larger brakes, for that car (F30/31) 18” wheels are the smallest that will fit.
I imagine an X3 with 35d engine and m sport spec will have 18” wheels as minimum too.
A physical check is best.

Bump - I know there are a couple of lurkers here with x35d's that seem to have a 17' option (there is ref to one with all terrain tyres!)

So there must be some way round it...

Have you looked at the sticker inside the door? My BMWs have always shown every tyre size option there. It might give you a clue to what diameters fit.

Alternatively ask Mrwinterwheels for a quote. Give them your reg and they can usually give you all the options. They got it right for me with my month old XF which was one of the first MY18s.

It came with 19” rims and I wanted and got 17”. I wasn’t sure they’d fit because there wasn’t an inch clear between the Caliper and the 19” rim but the 17” they supplied have a different shape to the wheel well and fit fine.

Sorry I should have replied to this. I managed to get a set of BMW 18in alloys and winter tyres (part worn Pirelli sottozero) from ebay Germany for just over £1000. To confirm these do fit the X3 35D m sport.

Shape of the inner barrel seems to be everything. One of my summer sets has hollow spokes and at ET40is perilously clue to my Brembos. That's on an 18" rim. My 17" need a 20mm spacer even though ET47. And he set of 16" steelies people said would never ever go over my 345mm discs and Brembo 4 pots go on with only a 10mm spacer. Just something to do with the shape.

That’s all understandable I guess. The ET47 will go further in than a 40 and if there’s a slight taper the rim will get closer to the brake.

A steel rim is typically thinner than an alloy, giving another few mm.

I’d always try to avoid spacers if only to avoid bolt/stud length issues. I’ve never failed to find a set of wheels to fit without spacers or without the right offset give or take 1 or 2mm.
